Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Copying a database

I have developed a database which works on my computer but when I Copied it to CD and recopied it to another machine running Alpha 5 it started to do very unuasual things. Like when you edit a record in a form and enter something in an empty field the other data disappears and the record gets lost from the table. Lookup tables don't work they show an empty table even though there is data in it. that can be viewed in the table. I don't know if the problem is caused by the cd writer or what.

    Someone please help!!!

    RE: Copying a database

Almost all of us have learned the hard way that a file copied to a cd has its attribute changed to read only. When you transfer the files from the CD to the new hard drive, highlight the whole list and uncheck read only in (I think) properties.

By accident, I observed that if you combine the database files into a zip archive and copy to CD the attribute of the individual files is not set to read only.

I had changed the files to attribute so unfortunatly this is not the solution.

        RE: Copying a database

make a folder on your cd and copy your table or the full directory from the dos prompt (if doing it regularly suggest a dos batch file on your desktop)

        restore it the same way.

        attributes willl be unchanged.

David, if doesn't sound like read only attributes is the issue.

Most likely you are making a "hard" reference to your directory name somewhere, or you are using more than one app for your directory.

First, in the control panel, click on the setting that displays tables in detail. Then look carefully to be sure all files are in the same directory name. I have unwittingly created that problem.

Following that, try to remember any scripts that may directly reference the directory name.

            change the above line to
more than one directory for your app.

              RE: Copying a database

David, if the files are not marked 'read only' the problems you're seeing may be caused by drive and path discrepancies. If your original database (including all tables, forms, and indexes) is spread across more than one folder then Alpha Five hardcodes the physical path to each component in its dictionaries. When you copy the database to another machine the dictionaries are copied, too. If the drive spec or folder arrangement is not identical on the target machine, Alpha Five can't find the files because it uses the hardcoded physical path as its roadmap, so to speak. Since the drive or folder specs are now different Alpha Five can't see the files.

So, if you want your database to be 'portable', it's vital to keep the entire database inside a single folder on your development machine. When this is done Alpha Five looks for the component pieces in the same folder as the ADB file by default and since they're all in the same folder each piece can be 'found' when needed, even if the folder or drive name on the target machine is different than the names of the drive and folder on your development machine.

                Tom -
I don't want to butt in but just wanted to say thanks for making it clear how A5 deals with locating files after an application is moved to another machine.
I wonder how many users have been puzzled by this - I know I was - even after reading several posts as to how to avoid the problem. Perhaps Alpha should consider a short explanation in the manuals for ver. 5 (unless I'm missing something in the current 4.5 docs.), especially when the templates are set up with forms/tables etc. in subdirectories.

                Thanks again
                Don

                  RE: Copying a database

The templates may reside in certain directories, not a problem, as long as the entire application resides in a particular directory ( database tables and sets ). Take a look at the new "Tips" section. Steve Workings gives a very good explanation of this.

In the control panel I can't find the settings you refer to that show the file location details. Please inform me what it is under.
