Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Payroll software

Has anyone written an after-the-fact payroll program ?? If so, I'd sure like to hear from you. Thanks.

    RE: Payroll software

I am not sure what you mean by after-the-fact, but I track employees paid hours and create a summary report which I use to fill out forms for a Payroll service. Then when the payroll comes back (after-the-fact?) I enter the employer taxes for each employee and finally run a jobcosting report that spreads the payroll costs including gross and taxes so I can put a single journal entry in my accounting that disperses the costs appropriately.
The Alpha Five side is actually not that difficult. The hardest part was getting the payoll service to give a report of employer taxes by employee... When I got that I created the form for data entry to match.

Stephen, your utility program sounds useful. Would you mind zipping
      along a copy?

        RE: Payroll software

Umm - it is buried inside a rather complex application. I would have to start from scratch to make something up to zip it up. Yeah - its useful. The payroll piece is not that hard to build, but you need the billing, which builds on the estimating and it gets to be overkill.

Rather - what exactly is needed - let me tutor you through?

          RE: Payroll software

Thanks for you reply. I do my payroll in-house and do not use a payroll service. By after-the-fact I mean that payroll entries can be made at any time prior to the end of the quarter and these entries are then used to prepare the federal and state quarterly reports and the W-2's/1099's at the end of the year.

Have been gone for a couple weeks or would have gotten back to you sooner.

            RE: Payroll software

I was just wondering...nobody likes creating an Alpha Five solution to a problem more than I do. But with the many relatively inexpensive payroll programs available (Peachtree, Quicken), why re-invent the wheel?

              RE: Payroll software

I agree with you to some extent. The software you cited is definitely good but an overkill and too much money for a small office environment such as mine. The package I now use is from AME and I consider it a very amateur attempt at programming but marginally functional. And the price charged for the product reflects the minimal effort put into writing the software.

I was inquiring to Alpha with some hope of finding something but mostly out of frustration with my existing software. Regardless, till something better comes along, I'll struggle along with what I'm now using.

In any case, thanks for your reply. I appreciated hearing from you.

                Jim,
I have been using a payroll program from Medlin accounting for many years. It is shareware and comes with the state and federal tables loaded. Only downside is you have to order a new one every year with the updated tables. Only $35 and well worth it for a small business. Keeps hours, fed and state taxes for multiple states, writes checks (if you want) and gives all kinds of summary reports as well as doing the W2's at the end of the year. I believe their website is medlin.com.
