Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: Help with Concatenation

That's not a concatenation, that's more like an address label layout.

Where do you want the fields to appear? Are we talking label, letter head, form?

Suppose you want to design a letter "addressee" section.

On one line you would put the name, on the next line you would put the address, then you could define a calculated field "csz" for the concatenation of city, state, and zip, and put this on the next line.

This should give you the "look" you want.
    There can be only one.

Its a tabbed form the fifth tab (billing) yes it would look like a label address. I'm wanting to put it in the left top corner of the form and thats know problem. The problem isI would like the concatenated fields in calcuclation field to look like a label so if the user looks at it they know it's the right client.

        RE: Help with Concatenation

I think what you want is this:

        alltrim(Custlist->Bill_City)+", "+ut(Custlist->Bill_St)+" "+Custlist->Zip

Put it in a calc field.

          RE: Help with Concatenation

I do this in reports with the name on first line, address on second line, and "city, state zip" on 3rd line.

If I have two fields, one for first_name and one for last_name my calc display field is...

          trim(first_name) + " " + trim(last_name)

          Result: Mike Konoff

Address is normally just placing the field where you want it.

"City, State Zip" format, I do just like Russ, 'cept I use trim like above.

then I line the 3 fields up one on top of another.

Was I my information able to help you in any way?

          Mike
          Thank you,

            RE: Help with Concatenation

are you looking for something like chr(13)??
            example name+ chr(13) + address would give
            name
            address

if so, I have never gotten alpha to do this

chr(13) is used in some languages as a carriage return, maybe in 5?

Yes that what I've been trying to get Alpha to do. I've done it before in FileMaker and Access .
Thanks Dave, Stan, Russ, and Mike for your replies

                  RE: Help with Concatenation

Why not just make a Rich Text object, and drop the fields in there?

                    RE: Help with Concatenation

                    Bob:

The following expression works fine as long as it is placed in a rich text object on a form and I assume would work the same way in RTF in a report...

                    trim(Title)+" "+trim(first)+" "+trim(last)+Chr(13)+Chr(10)+trim(Address1)+Chr(13)+Chr(10)+trim(Address2)+Chr(13)+Chr(10)+trim(city)+", "+trim(state)+" "+trim(zip)

Standard character fields can't handle the cr/lf.

I've been out of the office for few days and just this morning tried your suggestion and it worked great.
