Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Form automatically opens in enter mode

My form named HospView is based on a 2 table set. I do have scripting language in the OnFetch and OnExit. When I open this form immediately after opening Alpha5, it opens normally in a display mode showing fetch_first record. But, when I close it and open it subsequent times, it automatically opens in an "enter mode"; instead of fetching the first record existing in the set and remaining in a display mode.

I have no scripting on the OnInit script action. Nor on the OnActivate script action.

Anybody have idea of what is going on and how I can fix this?

Victor, I suggest you open the default form for the set. If records are present in the parent table the default form should open without going into enter mode. If this works correctly, that points to a problem in the scripts in your form.
Something in one of your scripts is causing the form to go into enter mode. Do any of your scripts fetch past the last record in your parent table? -- tom

      Tom,

Thanks for responding. I reviewed my scripts, but do not see anything that would demand or require the form to automatically open in "enter" mode. But upon opening the form this morning I did find this. In the status bar below I saw the symbol for a query present. Thus, there is no existing records in the query, thus requiring to open into "enter" mode.

I do have a script that runs a query in the OnExit action. Somehow it must be that that query remains active when active or attached to that form when it is reopened again. How do I remove or detach it?

        Victor,

Try setting the tab order #1 to something other than a field; ie: button, title, etc.

          Victor,

Yes, you have probably found the culprit. Alpha Five tries hard to 'remember' the last 'view' of your table, so that when you reopen the table, Alpha Five returns you to where you 'left off'. Usually this is of great help. In your case it seems to be causing a problem. If the query returns no matching records the form thinks the table is empty, so it automatically goes into Enter mode.

It seems odd to me that your OnExit script for your form runs a query. Usually, running a query is a preliminary step to other processing or reporting. It's unusual to do this as processing is ending... The simplest solution to your problem may be to not run the query as the form is being closed.

If you will explain more about what you're trying to do in the OnExit script, perhaps other alternatives could be suggested.

            Tom,

In the OnExit script, I am trying to identify those records that have certain logical field value of .t.; mark them; copy them to other files; then go back & delete them. It all works great except that query is applied to that form when reopened later.

I put all this scripting OnExit with the understanding that a person will possibly change that logical field while in this form.

              Victor,

Ok. After deleting the marked records, have your script reset the active index for the table. Do this by dropping the query from the table using querylistpointer.drop(). Then reset the active index using table.index_primary_put().

                Victor,
Tom's ideas will fix your situation. Are you running this application with simultaneous users? If you are, I would think this could eventually get a little messy. Two users could be exiting at the same time and writing records into your second table at the same time (dupes). Or while one user is deleting records, and the other user is reading the records, you might get some unwanted results.
