Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Page Code 863 ??????

Since I am having problem reading accented characters from external DBF files with A4V4.5, someone suggested that I asked where I can change the "Page Code" to 863.

Apparently "863" correspond to French Canada characters.

This page code should solve my problem????

I don't know anything about "page code".

    Can anyone clarify please ?

    Thanks

    JP

    RE: Page Code 863 ??????

    Hey JP:

This might work. Code page (comme on dit en anglais) includes a mapping scheme for the extended ascii character set which is where the accented characters are interpreted. The problem is that there is more than one French code page. Believe it or not, the Quebec government has not standardized on one so that one branch of the ministry of education uses Dawson College to translate the stuff that comes out of another branch of the same ministry because they are unable to communicate directly.

I find this hard to believe but it is true. A very smart guy in our MIS department named Don Lewis wrote some kind of translator because we receive stuff from all the branches.

Personally I don't know much about code pages and especially how to change a machine's code page. Can someone help us with this.

I'll ask Don tomorrow about 863 and share what I find out.

    Bill

This issue has caused me so much grief I cannot begin to tell you.

If you go to control panel, regional settings, it allows you to select a language - Perhaps there is one there that will work, like french canadian?

If I remember correctly the code page can be set from the DOS command line but its been too many years and I have no idea how to do it now. I think its the ANSI code page but that's all I remember.

        RE: Page Code 863 ??????

        Thanks Bill,

Apparently the page code 863 would be the right one, but I was told that the code choice should be with install or setup file.

If this is the case Alpha peoples should be able to solve this not needed problem.

In another post on the board I mentionned that the problem does not exist when opening the same file with Access. I have a french version of Office 2000 and I can open any dbf file created with any program without any problem. All accented characters come out correctly.

I will say a little prayer for Don, that may help him in finding a solution.

I look forward to see his findings.

        Regards

          Russ,

Thanks for the suggestion. I guess what you are referring to is the Regional Parameters.

The problem is more complex and changing the parameters does not improve anything.

The funny thing is that if I write the accented characters using Alpha, I have no problem.

The problem, as I explained, is with Table created with another program, like Clipper for instance.

May be someone at Alpha will find the solution, I guess it is quite important for a product that is used in many countries with all different accented characters.

          Regards

          JP

            Bill,

I found this on the http://www.cit.gu.edu.au/~davidt/cit3611/overview/internationalisation_code_sets.htm

May be of some interest, but I do not quite understand.
