Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Strange Personality

    V4.5 build 263

I am getting multi menu bars when switching from view to design mode and I am unable to compact the database. Alpha wants to drop the tables for the databse. A search revealed a problem quite some time ago where a patch took care of it. The patch was in v4.3.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Ken,

Why don't you install Built 266 available on Alpha Web site ?.

May be it will solve your problem. I don't know but at least you will have the last version.

    Regards

      Ken,

I recall now that I am having the same problem once in a while.

Closing and reopening the application sometimes solve the problem. Thst is what I was doing.

        Ken

This may be trite but everytime I get one of those 'you want to drop this table from the .......' messages, it's been a form opened as dialog and then not closed properly in the code.

Once I discovered Alpha was doing this I use 'Database Compact' while testing the script with the open, dialog method to make sure that my code WAS closing it.

        Just a thought

          Ken,

Yes, I suspect that the dialog form is open although I did close it with the X. I'll check it out when I get home from work tonight.

          Thanks,

No, It wasn't the dialog form. I am able to do a database compact and update the indexes. However, as soon as I go to design mode, no matter which form I choose, I see 2 of the white icons on the left side of the menu bar, 2 Edit, 4 Browse and 4 Column menu items. Some menu items reveal no choices and clicking on some will lock up the app.

            What's up Doc?

            Thanks,

James Talbot reported a solution to something similar last December. I found it searching for "multiple menu" without the quotes.

He experienced what you are describing whenever his database was set to run a particular form when it opened, *and* in the properties for the selected "run on load" form each menu had been set to 'none'.

If that's your situation you might want to include a custom menu which is blank, or has only 'Exit' type menu entry.

one cause is that if you are developing, and opening and closing a form, repeatedly, that has a command controlpane.show() you will start getting multiple menus in the control panel.

                  No Controlpanel.show being used.

                    Tom,

I found other posts but not that one. The only form where I have "None" selected is for the menu on the startup form.

I had created a form to be opened as a dialog. Going by what Ken Harold suggested, I first removed the "dialog" part of the script. That didn't change anything. Then I deleted the form and it still didn't change anything, even after closing the app and rebooting twice.

Well then, I did whtacha do when all else fails, Go To Bed!! Woke up at 3 something and turned on the beast. All is working fine. (When I first experienced this the other day, rebooting didn't solve the problem but after shutting the computer completely down and then turning it back on the next day, all was back to normal until I tried to switch to design mode.)

Going to redo the form and open as normal. If that's OK, then I'll add the "dialog" and.....see what happens.

                    Thanks,

                    ken

                      Here's Jay's post from 12-14-2000

                      Charles,

As the "king" of multiple menus and buttons, let me tell you what we found out(we is the NY User's
                      group).

If you start the application with all of the "load on Run" form menus set to None, you will have this
problem when you go from view to design. Putting a single item menu (in our case I used Exit) on
the form prevented the problem entirely.

                      Hope this helps.

                      Jay Talbott

Ken, this is the 28th hit using a search of
                      multiple menu

                        Hi Tom,

Yes, I did find the post you referred to and also did some experimentation and verified that indeed, the problem is the same situation as Jay described. Perhaps I was too tired to see it clearly but, I am thankful you took the time to do some research. It saved me a bunch of time.

                        Thank you,
