Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Contact Manager Activity Error

Finally have all PCs in SP2. So far it is going ok until one PC that uses the Contact Manager gets an error:
"Unhandled Exception. Alpha5 will do a forced termination."
whenever user hits the button for new Activity.

I have searched this forum for similar case before posting but no luck. I check the Regional Languages Settings but we all checkboxes are UNCHECK.

I don't know where to start looking to resolve this.

    Appreciate any help. Thanks.

    RE: Contact Manager Activity Error

I assume that the other computers don't get this error?

If this is the case, you might try copying the application from a computer that works to the one that shows the error - there could be a minor difference in something that is causing the error.

You could also try re-installing Alpha on the offending machine. Maybe something got screwed up in the registry.

By the way, "Unhandled exception..." is a polite way of saying that the program crashed (in case you didn't know).

      Thanks Bill for the suggestion.

However, after reinstalling, the system crashed 3x in the morning.

All PCs are running XP SP2 and are working fine except for this.

We are considering replacing the machine.

      Thanks again.

We got the error again after replacing it with a NEW machine.

        What's up with this?

I really don't know where and how to start to troubleshoot the problem.

        Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

          RE: Contact Manager Activity Error

I don't see a "new activity" button in the application. What am I missing?

If the program has never ever worked correctly maybe you have a bad download. You might contact customer service to make arrangements to download a fresh copy.

            RE: Contact Manager Activity Error

I have the application. The 'New Activity' button's On-Push event simply contains the function:

            "b"activities.new_record()"/b"

Is it possible the Activities table is non-existant, corrupted or locked? You can find this info using the control panel.

The only other possibility I can see is the 'On-FlyOver' events (used to change the button's colors)

By the way, it works fine on my machine (Win XP Pro SP2)

              Bob,

Trixie never told me where to find the button, but with your help I spotted it on the Activities tab of the Contact Manager form.

The New Activity button does nothing as long as edits are suppressed in the form. If you press F3 or click Form and then check Allow Edits, the button works just fine.

                RE: Contact Manager Activity Error

Hmmm... Since my copy works as advertised, and so does most of her machines... Why would some users need to press F3 (to allow edits) and some machines not need this requirement?

                  RE: Contact Manager Activity Error

                  Bob,

The form specifies "System Default" for its data entry style.

If the user's database setting for Default Data Entry Style is Modal, then edits using this form would be disabled until the user enables them on purpose. The same would be true if the data entry style for the form itself had been set to Modal.

                    Thanks for ALL your replies.

Apologize for not looking back in this msg board. I was out for a while and just got back.

I am still monitoring the behavior of the PC. I am trying to see the pattern, if there is any. I still don't understand what would trigger the "Unhandled..." error.

                    "sigh"

You don't say whether you downloaded the app again??? This might be smart if the app is not running correctly on any of your machines. If it's running correctly on some machines but not all, then I fear you're in for heavy sledding as you try to figure out why some are different than others.

                        Hi Tom,

No, I haven't downloaded the app yet. But you have to understand that we are using CM for a year now and we only got this "Unhandled..." error when we switched the machines to SP2.

                        Thanks.

Ok. I take your point. downloading a fresh copy is unlikely to help at all. Uninstalling Alpha Five, cleaning the registry, re-installing Alpha Five, and then reinstalling the app would be my next steps. Beyond that I'm fresh out of ideas.

                            Hi Tom,

                            I really appreciate your input.

I will try reinstalling A5 again and all components. Though this is a brand new machine, just don't understand why this just happened.

Anyway, beyond that, we will try to figure out something.

                            Again, thanks.

                            Trixie.
