Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Current Record Changes on Edit

I have a set with a parent table (Company) that is one-to-many linked to a child table (Address), and Address is one-to-many linked to a second child table (Contacts). I have a form that has three browses on it (one for each table) that allows for easy selection of the records for each table. Also on this form I have all of the fields of the fields to each table for editing.

The Company and Address Tables edit fine - even if there are multiple Address records for the same Company. Where I am having the problem is that if I have more than one Contact for a particular Address, it will allow me to edit the first Contact. But if I try to update the second Contact in the list, as soon as I start typing in any field associate with the Contact Table, it switches the record back to first Contact in the Browse list.

I have tried updating the indexes for all of the tables and set, and have compacted the database. The Referential Integrety (set to Cascade Changes), Include Record from Parent Table (set to Always), Filter (set to "blank") and Order (set to "blank") are the same for both child table links. Yet one works and the other doesn't.

Does anyone have any ideas on what is wrong?

    Thanks - Doug

Do you see the same behavior if you disable referential integrity at both levels of your set?

Ok. How about posting a zipped copy of the database for us to examine? If this is possible, please include step by step, keystroke by mouse click instructions for us to follow in order to see the problem. -- tom

          Tom,

The entire database is around 10 Mb. I think there is a one or two Mb limit for this forum. Since I sent out my first thread, I have continued to mess around with it and added more test info into the tables. In doing so, I am finding out that it doesn't do it all the time. It appears that I am not having the problem with any of the new test info I have recently entered. I am only having problems with records that were previosly entered. Even if I enter new contacts to old Address and Company records, it doesn't give me the problem.

Does this lead you to any conclusions? I am going to try to delete out the old Contacts and re-enter them, hoping that solves the problem for good.

I hope that takes care of it, but I am still interested in your thoughts in case it doen't work or I have the problem again.

          Thanks - Doug

            Doug,

            Nothing specific occurs here.

In general terms however, I try to avoid multi-layered data input sets. Will use them for navigation, but don't favor using them for data entry. The article at www.learn alpha.com called something like "Simplify Your Application for Better Performance" has served me well over the years.
