Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    printer speed

    Hi All

Users always complain to me that printer(OKIDATA 9 pin printer) runs too slow and font is so darker. They use Dos kind of Database before. The print runs faster. Now they use windows XP as workstation and printer is directly connected to workstation. I try to change the setting of printer, it didn't help. Any suggestion is appreciated. Thank you in advance.

    RE: printer speed

DOS software sent information to dot matrix printers as character strings which the printer was set up to simply print, one line of characters at a time. It was a very fast process. Dot matrix printers were quite slow at printing graphics, and that's where you're running into problems with Windows software.

Windows software is sending truetype fonts to the dot matrix printer as graphics, and you are getting graphics printing speed as a result.

      Romy,

Paul is right. Windows prints each page as an image. Remember how long DOS printers took to print an entire page as an image?

I suggest you help the client search for Windows specific drivers for their printer. A newer, Windows compatible, printer would speed things along, too.

because they use the printer to print the invoice. It works better. Maybe I need to use the default font for that printer. I am not sure which font I should use for that printer. Thank you all for replying me.

            RE: printer speed

            Romy,

I don't remember the specifics of the Oki printer but, some of the dot matrix printer appear to print slow when they are printing in letter quality mode (LQ) and on some printers there is a Near Letter Quality mode (NLQ). Those modes are much slower than draft - the fastest, because the print head is striking the ribbon and paper multiple times. On some dot matrix printers, the print head makes a pass from left to right and then back from right to left for each line, essentially cutting the print speed in half. Some of the DMPs strike the paper, move over half a dot and strike again - slow printing again, but higher quality.

You'll have to find the setting for your printer. Some printers have a control panel that allows you to control the print quality, on others it is software controlled.

Regarding the dark print you mentioned, it could be cause by what I just said, OR the print head could be too close to the paper. On most DMP there is a small lever, like a gear shift in a car, on the side of the print head that control the distance from the paper. You might want to check that out.

              Romy,
FWIW here's how I handled it: Load the printer driver to your development computer and make it the default windows driver. You don't need the printer, just the driver. When you open A5, the printer and it's DOS fonts will appear in the font list in the report/letter/label design layouts. Choose the printer and then the DOS font you want for the report. Now the printer will print in DOS using native fonts instead of True-Type fonts.

Send your amended layouts to your customer. The downside of this is you must know the exact printer your customer is using.

              Hope this helps.

Thank you all for taking time reply to me. I got the print font part right. I set print menu to "Draf", when it start printing, it goes back to NLQ(near letter quality, this one is slowest setting). I have no idea about that. Does any one know? Thank in advance

                  Romy,
I was never able to control the print beyond getting the printer to print in native fonts; i.e. I could not control draft, NLQ, etc. Had to set that at the computer. I think Jim Chapman published some information on how to send printer control codes from A5. You might search the alpha newsletters for it.

Finally, I find a solution. I installed the Epson drive and set to default. I use the font(draf) in the report design model. It works good now. Thank you all again.
