Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha Five and Pervasive

    Hello all,
In the first place I wish you all a healthy 2005 with big business.
In the second place my question : who has experience with use of Pervasive.SQL with Alpha Five ? Why I ask this ? I'm developing almost 15 years in Magic and use Pervasive as the database. Because of the runtime- ans supportcontract-prices I want to migrate to another tool. I will try to smoothly migrate : both tools wille read/write the Pervasive tables.
So, I want to know :
    - can Alpha Five read Pervasive tables?
    - how is the connection made Native, ODBC, OLE DB ?
    - is it working fast ?
TIA, Teun van Unen - UNDIX InformatieSystemen - The Netherlands

    RE: Alpha Five and Pervasive

    Hi Teun --

We hope you'll join the Alpha Five community!

Maybe someone else will be able to respond directly to your question, but did you also know you can download a 30-day free trial of the full version from this web site? If you haven't already done that, I'd suggest you give it a try and see what you can discover for yourself.

And you've already discovered one of the best tools: this message board, so ask away and I'm sure people will try to help.

      RE: Alpha Five and Pervasive

      Hello Steve,
Thanks for your reply and your welcome. I can tell you I had already bought Alpha Five V5 and the upgrade to V6, because my opinion was : It's a very good tool. I'll use it for some new little projects as a trial try, but to migrate a big application ..... OK, I can find it out by myself but that needs time and when I afterwards get the experience of low speed I have spoiled much time, so I hope(d) for experience in the Alpha Five community. Maybe there is ....
      Kind regards, Teun.

        RE: Alpha Five and Pervasive

Presently A5v6 has some abilities to converse with ADO/ODBC data. This is basically using its proprietary xdialog to display and edit data that is not an Alpha dbf.
At the present time, this is probably most useful when developing a web application. There are a number of genies that make this rather easy.
However, to use Alpha's full compliment of design functionality (forms, reports etc) dealing with a database such as Pervasive, you will have to wait for a5v7. This version is supposed to allow Alpha to seamlessly function as a frontend for a database such as Pervasive.
The goal is to combine Alpha's ease of development with the stability of a client-server database engine.

          Hello John,
Thanks for this very good news. Where can I get that information about V7? And do you know when it will be announced? Teun
