Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Table in use

A client has a program that has been running well for at least a couple of months. I got a call today that there is a problem with one of the files. The file is a list of auto license numbers that get copied to a floppy disk to send to DMV. I verified that there was a problem with the table but when I tried to do anything to that table, I got an error message "table in use". I could not zap it, delete it, etc.
I checked autoexec to see if somehow the table got opened, checked the menu form events (there are none), and the menu form is not based on this table. I tried to copy the backup dbf file to the working folder but got the same results. Ran "compact" without success. I got the client up and running by having her use the backup file, to which I had copied all of the several dbf files that make up the application (except the one that was giving me trouble). There is only one instance of A5V5 running (Runtime). Does anyone have any idea why the application "thinks" the file is open?

    RE: Table in use

Howard, it sounds to me as though the open file message you're seeing is being reported by Alpha Five because the operating system thinks the file is open. Depending on your system / network configuration a table can be left open (as far as the system is concerned) even after Alpha Five closes down. During development this is most often due (at least for me) to incorrectly coded scripts which crash Alpha Five but leave the tables open.

The only sure fire solution (so far as I know) is to shut the system down and reboot the operating system.

      RE: Table in use

Howard, you don't indicate that you've done a search on the issue. I found 41 posts going back to 2002 when I searched for "table in use".

      Have you examined this information?
      There can be only one.

        RE: Table in use

Thanks, Tom, but I turned off the computer and rebooted with no luck. The application has been running without error for a couple of months, at least, so I didn't suspect a script. In fact, no scripts run that address this table.

          RE: Table in use

Thanks, Stan. Yes, I scanned this information but not in great detail. From what I could tell, none of them seemed to address this specific problem. Most of them concerned problems in development. My application has been running problem free. I really don't need to resolve this, since I have the app. up and running again as stated in my question, but just threw it into the "pot" to see if anyone had some ideas. Don't spend any time on it.

            Howard,

if the app is running on a LAN, the server is the machine that must be rebooted, not the workstation. -- t

Tom, the application is running on the local machine, not networked.

                Ok.

That means one of two things to me:

                a) some process in your application is opening the table when you don't expect it; or

                b) the table itself has become corrupted.

Perhaps others will have more (& better!) ideas for you.

                  RE: Table in use

Tom, I dropped out of Alpha and went to windows. I then deleted the table and all files associated with it. I copied the backup files into the application folder. Guess what? Same problem. But if I close the application and run it from the backup folder, it works OK!
If something in the application were opening the table, why did it wait for several months to do so? Program has been OK up to now, and this particular file is used every week.
Is there a file in Alpha 5 that keeps track of open tables? Maybe the problem lies there.
