Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Operations - This Just Keeps Getting Better

I created 3 operations: 1) Delete Records, all-to initialize a holding file, 2) Copy Records-to move a set of selected records into the holding file for manipulation, 3 Delete Duplicate Records-to have a unique set of entries-based on a key field.

Delete Records works on file 'holdpeople'
Copy Records works on a set that copies to 'holdpeople'
Delete Duplicate Records works on 'holdpeople'

I tied these 3 to a button on a form using Action Scripting-Run Saved Operation, they are in the proper order, they do exist in the List of Operations before I start. When I push the button, I get notices that the file is being emptied, the new records are being copied in, and then that the 3rd operation does not exist. I go back and look at my operations tab and Operations 1 and 3 are no longer in my list. Where did they go? I did this more than once with the same results.

    Any thoughts?

Your second step, copy records, may be overwriting the existing data dictionary in which the delete duplicates is defined.

Open your delete operation in design mode, select the "copy settings" menu choice and uncheck "Delete existing data dictionary".

Screen shot attached shows the location.
    There can be only one.

RE: Operations - This Just Keeps Getting Better

My problem seems to deal with deleting the records in 'holdpeople' which also apparently deletes operations dealing only with 'holdpeople' (I tried a different angle of attack and saw the operations disappear that way also). So, if I want to initialize a file, it can't be done with a 'delete' operation the way I want to use it. I also tried 'zap(empty)table' in action scripting instead of the first operation, but it killed my 'delete duplicate records' operaion also. I guess it will require coding which is unfamiliar territory right now, or I need to take a different design approach. What I'm doing is selecting records where a parent file condition is met, comparing it to a child record for a match, taking a different key from there and selecting grandchild records to export, but I want to remove duplications first. I also want to make sure that the holding file is empty before I begin.

      Any suggestions?

RE: Operations - This Just Keeps Getting Better

My screen looked a little different, but therein was the problem. I had options to 'copy dictionary from input table to result table', 'do not copy dictionary from input table to result table, and 'keep result table's dictionary'. The default was to copy the dictionary which was what I had. It worked on 'keep result table's dictionary'.

        Thank you so much.

          Fred,

I think you should clearly state what you are trying to do and the difficulties you experience.

Avoid metaphorical turns of phrase such as "killed my operation" which could mean:
-deleted a saved operation (not likely), or
-prevented if from running (more likely)
etc. as they are to imprecise to allow us to help you.

Stan's advice has followed from the basic point that saved operations associated with a table are contained in the table's dictionary files. Hence, emptying the table of records will not disturb these operations in any way. However, deleting the table and creating a new one with the same name could do so if you allow the dictionary files to be recreated.

So do not delete the holding file. Merely empty it. Then append new records to it.

A ""table_pointer>.zap()" will not delete anything but the records. If something else is disappearing, it's for another reason.
