Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Database Lookup

    I want to perform a lookup to a "Dependent Database" to bring back and display the dependent name on a Form. I want to use two fields in the lookup, both numeric.

    Field 1) is SocialSecurityNumber Numeric 9 0 decimals
    Field 2) is DependentNumber Numeric 5 0 decimals

    I appreciate your help!

    Thanks in advance,
    Edwin Diaz

    RE: Database Lookup

    Before you go any further, you might consider the advice

    - Unless you intend to use a series of digits in some calculation, the series should be considered a character string, not a number. This would apply to zip/postal codes, phone numbers, social security numbers, etc.
    There can be only one.

      Hi Edwin:

      Take Stan's advice. It will save you headaches down the road. Set linking fields should definitely be character even if they are going to contain numeric data. Voice of experience speaking here. Got bit in the butt deep in a project before I found this board and the repeated advice about using character fields unless you are going to perform calculations.

      As for your look up question, check Alpha's help. Click the index tab and type "lookup". You should find what you need there.

        RE: Database Lookup

        Thank you for your response. Maybe I'm not too clear, I can't imagine that in Alpha5 (forgetting about if the fields are numeric or alpha), I cannot do a lookup as follows:

        Get record where socialsecurity = 123456789 and
        dependentnumbr = 03

        That's what I'm trying to accomplish. I checked the Help but it is not too clear.

        Thanks.

          Hi Allen,

          Y is this a problem using numeric you dont have to worry about leading 000000 this way and all the other trouble that comes with auto-incr field if set to chr?

            RE: Database Lookup

            This is a data warehouse application where the data was downloaded from a mainframe application where the fields in question are numeric.
            Regardless, I would like to know if you can do a lookup in Alpha Five using a concatination of fields, in this case, SocialSecurityNumber and DependentNumber.

            Thank you.

              RE: Database Lookup

              You can if you have an index built on the same concatenation expression.

              String = LOOKUPC( Match_Type as C, Key_Value as C, Lookup_Expression as C, Lookup_Table as C, Index_Name as C )

              Key_Value as C

              must match

              an entry in

              Index_Name as C
              There can be only one.

                RE: Database Lookup

                And there's where the problem will arise.

                The only concatenation of

                socialsecurity = 123456789 and
                dependentnumbr = 03

                as numeric fields is

                123456789 + 03 for a value of 123456792

                how does that differ from

                123456788 + 04

                You will need to build an index on alltrim(str(socialsecurity)) -alltrim(str(dependentnumbr))

                and then lookup based on that expression as the key value. This would give you index entries like

                12345678903
                12345678804

                for the above instances..

                By the way, "dependentnumbr = 03"

                03 is not a number.
                There can be only one.

                  Thank you very much for your reply. I will try it when I get into the office next Tuesday. I will be out for the rest of the week and Monday.

                  Thanks again,
