Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: Runtime app losing forms!

Thanks, John...I didn't know one could simply copy (drag/drop) to a cd. I'll try that. I'm using Windows 2000.
I'll just skip right back over to the IT department and give it a whirl :)

      Hi Wanda:

To extend what John said, I believe that you will require a UDF packet writing program/driver such as Nero's InCD (see http://www.nero.com/us/631898241930156.html).

The ability to write to CD-RW (not CD-R) as if it were a large hard disk (and thus overcome the 'read-only' issue) is not built-in to Windows 2000.

Now that 512-meg compact flash cards are reasonably priced, I often use a USB compact-flash reader, such as the Zio reader to transport files. With 2 compact flash cards, I can easily transport 1 gig of data in a very small package.

      Take care,

      George

        RE: Runtime app losing forms!

Ok, now I have a question. If a person was to make a zip archive of the files they wanted to copy on their hard drive, then write the zip file to a CDR. Give this cd to the other users and have them unzip the files to the correct alpha5 directory, Would that not then retain the correct properties of the files?

Would using the install maker or a program like Astrum InstallWizard make it even easier, in that the exe could be run and place the files in the correct directory retaining the correct properties? Then all the user would have to do is double click the the exe file on the CDR. Or it could be autorun when inserted.

        Curious,

        Phil

Phil, I'm surprised no one mentioned to Wanda that if she zips the folder, the original attributes are retained, and the r/w is not an issue. And yes, I don't see why she couldn't put the stuff in an auto installer.

Just for the record, although I'm not sure as to the specifics, I have found that some CD/DVD writeable drives, under XP, retain the attributes, and do not require zipping and/or changing; but I don't think it is yet widespread enough to make any practical difference.

            RE: Runtime app losing forms!

            Hi Martin:

Yup. I guess a self-extracting .zip, created with the correct path switches & options set, would do the job.

If memory serves, the only real limitations on .zip archives are that the source files being 'zipped' into the archive cannot come from more than one drive (i.e., files from c: or d:, but not files from c: and d:), and the archive size cannot exceed 4 gigs.

I have not looked at any zip utilities (PKZip, WinZip) for a while, so newer version(s) may have overcome these limitations.

Also, there are plenty of freeware utilities available on CNET, Tucows and other shareware sites that can be used to create autorun CD's.

            Take care,

            George

              RE: Runtime app losing forms!

Wow - what an informative thread :) I must confess, though, that as soon as IT came and sat behind me, I was able to uncheck the Read Only Attribute on all the pasted files. Now everything works fine. It's kind of like going to the mechanic when your car is making a weird noise. It stops the minute you get there.

Thank you all for your comments! I hope to soon be on my own, developing database systems and leave this county job (because now they want me to ditch Alpha and go for Access - YUK!!! AND give speaches AND become a whiz at statistics. The problem is I DON'T WANT TO!

So, wish me luck and if anyone wants to throw some business my way - I'm just about ready to hang my shingle out!

              Regards,

              Wanda
