Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    SAVING/STORING VALUES IN A VARIABLE & RESTORIN

    Hi Everyone
Can anyone assist me on how to save values in a variable (numeric, character, etc), restore this variable anytime, use the value stored in it, change the value & resave it if I choose. I know how to create variables in a layout design mode I am not familiar on how to save a value in it & the value will remain in the variable even when A5 is not running. I am used to the VSAVE & VRESTORE funtion in A4 but I don't know if a similar command or funtion exists in A5. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

RE: SAVING/STORING VALUES IN A VARIABLE & REST

in your autoexec script, you can define global variables, like

dim global cnum as c 'for customer number
dim global rnum as n 'for record number

then, anywhere in your app, you can freely reference the variable's value and/or change it - it remains in memory for as long as your app is open

    or you could name them

dim global vcCnum as c 'for customer number
dim global vnRnum as n 'for record number

then, in a script you can say cnum=parentform:customer_number.value 'setting it for the current client

then whereever you go in the app the variable's value will remain until you change it again.

RE: SAVING/STORING VALUES IN A VARIABLE & REST

      Rawlings,

I don't believe there is a direct equivalent for Vsave or Vrestore, as you've grown accustomed to in Alpha Four.

Most simply store them in a table. If you build a script and name it autoexec it will be run each time the database opens. This script can open the table and retrieve the last stored values for each field, and then use them to assign the same values to a series of global variables.

Check this article at www.learn alpha.com for details:

By the way, if you're not familiar with www.learn alpha.com you would benefit from spending time there browsing the articles list.

RE: SAVING/STORING VALUES IN A VARIABLE & REST

        Hi all,

Something funny happened. I replied to this thread earlier today and was able to see my comment added to the thread. But now (obviously) it's gone. A metaphor for life, perhaps. Fleeting.

In any case, I recommended two options:
-storing variables in a table, and
-storing them in the database which Ver. 5 permits.

To do the former consult the link Tom recommends. For the latter, see the online docs for A5_save_settings() and A5_load_settings().

Wonder if this one will stick.

          Thanks Folks,
I will like to thank Martin, Tom, & William for your quick response/assistance to my variable question. I will implement all your suggestion into my application soon. Thanks.
