Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5 is just swell

I've been whining a lot lately and thought I would say something positive. I recently had to edit a program written in VB.net and I must say that the A5 form designer is much much better than M$'s VB form designer... amongst other things, but hey I'm not going to write a thesis on the topic...

Although having a "lock" feature would be nice :-)

    Sorry couldn't resist...

You can password protect a form if that's what you mean (under Save As).

If you like v5, check out the v6 features in the CHM file. "b"Whooaaa dude!

No I meant like in FM or VB where you can "lock" the objects on the form. That way you can drag and select within a tabbed object and things like that. It's a nice little feature but not critical...

10-4 on the whoooaaaa dude for v6... sounds awesome!

            Hello Joe,

""No I meant like in FM or VB where you can "lock" the objects on the form. That way you can drag and select within a tabbed object and things like that. It's a nice little feature but not critical... ""

I think I read somewhere that we will be able to 'lock' objects in v6.

Also, you can drag and select within a tabbed object right now. Just start your drag outside of the tabbed object, then when you have completely surrounded the objects on the tab desired, hold down the "-" key on the numeric keypad (NOT the numbered top row of keys) then let up the mouse button. This action causes Alpha to only select those objects COMPLETELY surrounded by the drag operation. A normal drag operation selects object where any part of the object is within the drag operation.

              RE: A5 is just swell

Thanks, I have been finding some neat A5 features like that on accident. I have purchased books from Pace, Wayne, and looked through the alpha materials but a lot of this stuff doesn't appear well documented. Too bad because some poor programmer stuck those in and "some" of us are not using them from lack of knowledge.

Incidentally, the Help on A5 doesn't pull up a "real" help file. This is disconcerting to me... The "help" file that does come up isn't a traditional help file and quite frankly I don't find it all that helpful. What's the deal here? Is a "real" help file available somewhere?

                Go here:

                http://www.alphasoftware.com/support/tech/alpha5/learningcenter.asp

Download the latest chm file - it's great.

Else use the OnLine Web help:

                    Joe,

One of the longstanding concerns for A5 was a lack of documentation. Many of us that use it regularly asked for more and better documentation, and we got it. Now there is so much documentation, it's sometimes hard to find what you want or need. So I can't support your criticism of the documentation.

Since you have Dr. Wayne's books, I'd suggest you work through the examples from start to finish. He laid out the basics of A5 in a logical, systematic way that provided a jump start for me. Also, work through the tutorial available in the learning center. I know it's more fun to jump in and program your app, but going through the tutorials will save you a lot of time later. It will provide familiarity with the features of A5 and make it easier to know where to look for the details.

I keep the link to the Alpha 5 on-line help file on my desktop. It can be opened in a second Internet Explorer Window and is therby always available for reference.

                    Best wishes; keep on pluggin'.

Actually, I'm not sure. But I always doubleclick on a link to the CHM and run it next to A5. Trust me though, that CHM is LOADED & FANTASTIC!

                        Hi Ohlen,

Are you using the CHM? It makes it so easy to find stuff - usually just by typing something into the index. I agree though, there is now tons of documentation - and it is VERY good!

Well after "finding" the learning center... I must redact my comment- there is a LOT of documentation... or perhaps I will just modify my comment to say that the installed documentation is not easily navigatable. How's that?

                          Still pluggin'

Yes. The CHM a tremendous resource. I think one of the problems for a new person is figuring out where to look. Hence, my recommendation to follow the tutorials. Once through those, knowing where to look and what to look for would be much easier.
