Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Importing other table types

    I'm new to Alpha 5.

I can't seem to find a way to convert/import other database table types. Surely there is a tool or a way, but I can't find it. Any help?

    Thanks,

    Jim

    RE: Importing other table types

What type of table type are you trying to import? On the main Alpha Five File menu you will see an Import item. Using the import Genie you can import ASCII, Excel and 1-2-3 files. Using the ODBC Import, you can import any ODBC data source.

      RE: Importing other table types

      Lenny,

      Thanks for responding.

For the moment I will want to import Paradox files, but others like dbf's and csv's will come.

I see no import item on the File menu, only New . . ., Open . . . and Close Database. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?

after reading the "Getting started with alpha five" it says there is such a Genie, but it doesn't appear on the menu, or anyplace else that I can find.

      Thanks,

      Jim

Import is on the File Menu when the control panel is displayed.

          RE: Importing other table types

          Jim,

You must create a database before you can import tables - a database is simply a collection of tables, forms, reports, code, etc. Click on New to create your new database, specify a name and then you'll see the Import option on thr File menu.

Additionally, there is no need to import DBF files since this is the native Alpha Five format. Instead you can just add them to your database. Once you have created your database, you will be looking at the Control Panel. While you're looking at the Tables/Sets tab of the control panel, the Table menu has an option Add Table/Set.

First you create an Alpha 5 database, then you import the other data.

After you create an Alpha 5 database the file menu choices will look like the attached image.

            Hope that helps.

I'm going to take a stab this summer at converting a Paradox 4.5 (DOS) application to A5V5 (which I haven't even bought yet). Any words of wisdom that you care to pass along?

                Bruce,

I haven't used Paradox 4.5, so I don't really know if the Paradox data storage format can be read by Alpha, or at least imported into Alpha 5, but I would GUESS that it can.

                Step 1 - buy Alpha 5 (sorry, I couldn't resist saying that)
Step 2 - print all the Paradox documentation that you can.
Step 3 - print screenshots of all the forms, menus, reports, etc., that you can and make extensive notes on them.
Step 4 - import (or convert) one table at a time, then make sure that the data is as you want it.
Step 5 - create any necessary sets.
Step 6 - duplicate the forms.
Step 7 - duplicate the reports and any other components that you need.
Step 8 - kick back and enjoy!!

                Welcome to the Alpha community.

                  RE: Importing other table types

                  Hello:

I haven't used Paradox in years but this will be as easy as it can get. Open Paradox and then save your Paradox DB data files as DBF files. Then you can use them as is in Alpha Five without going through an export/import procedure.

                    Bruce,

I'd advise you to start small. Do one piece at a time. Learning how the interface works, and then how to control it, will be a large part of your learning curve, since you will discover that you already know how the data model works. (tables, sets, indexes, expressions, functions, they'll all feel very familiar to you).

It's on my Sidekick to take care of Step 1 this coming Monday. Since Paradox 4.5 can export to dBase III file format, I should be o.k. Thanks for the comments.

                          RE: Importing other table types

The ability to record scripts in Alpha Five is the main reason that I am converting to it. That is how I taught myself PAL programming in Paradox 4.5 - also a big reason I was unable to move up into Paradox for Windows (recording was removed from the program).

As you say, I'll start with tiny steps. Thanks.

It will also export to dBase IV format. Use it instead of dBase III.

                              Bruce:

It's been years since I worked in Paradox for DOS but I think it's safe to say you can completely forget about forms, reports, and/or any scripts you created in Paradox. Be thankful you can quickly and easily save your Paradox data into the DBF format.

In fact, it's probably a blessing in disguise because now you will be forced to learn how to create Alpha Five Forms and Reports.
