Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    print filter with unique

I have a created a report that is supposed to use the current selection of records when it prints. Before printing I use a query to display the records in a form that shows only unique records based on a filter the order expression -salesman+last+first+job_type. The form that displays these records performs the query fine and displays only unique records yet when I go to print everything is okay (its uses the current selection) except the report prints duplicates and ignores the unique parameter. HELP?

    Jeffrey,

How about zipping a copy of the database files and posting it here? Point us to the form and report if there are many...

        No.

Often the 'entire' database is not necessary to be able to see the problem. Why not create a dummy database in another folder, copy the tables and sets (and all their related dictionary files) there. Delete most of the records, leaving enough behind of course to illustrate the problem. Once the dummy database is configured to show the problem, zip it and post it here with instructions telling us how to see the problem, as well.

If you check the reply message dialog box, two lines above 'Send Message' is a link that will give you additional information on 'What files must I send?'

Here are the files that should make this work. You will want to open the form "Job Revenue" and click on "This Week" to set calendar and then click on ""week" to go to the week of March 1. You will notice there is a "Jim Fox". The form will only show the first record for him but when you click the button to print the report will show multiple records. This will happen for other records on previous weeks that have multiple records for a customer. If you go directly to reports in the control panel and double click to run the report, the filter will work correctly - only the first "Jim Fox" will show up.

            Jeffrey,

Bad news. Your form doesn't work for me. The calendar doesn't work. I can't move to the previous week. I can't set meaningful dates for the query or report.

            Sorry.

              Jeffrey,

Is this a Version 4 application? The OnPush and OnArrive event scripts for the components of the calendar in your form appear to still be in A5V4 code. I'm using A5V5. Are you?

It was designed in V4 I am using V5 as well as everyone else. I only had to make minor changes to get the whole database to work in V5. This is not one of them. The calendar works great for us.

                  RE: print filter with unique

                  Jeffrey,

After trying various alternatives, I've tentatively concluded that the 'Unique' modifier for your form's query is not passed through to the report layout at print or preview time. I did not see anything you did wrong. The presence of a group break, ordered on the break is the likely cause, but I'm not certain. (there are no equivalent group breaks in the ordering arrangement in the form, of course.)

I decided to try to develop a work around for you. I added a second group break and defined it to match the unique ordering sequence you needed. I put the fields in the group header of the second group, instead of in the details band. The effect is that if a particular combination of Salesman + last + first + job_type is repeated, only the first instance gets picked up in the group header.

Take a look at Toms_Job Revenue layout in the attached database.

I took the liberty of changing your print button on the Job Revenue form to call my report instead of yours.

Hope you like it. More importantly, I hope it's a help.

As usual, the attachment should be unzipped into an empty folder to avoid overwriting your own data.

Thanks for the help. I haven't opened the file yet to try it but I thought that I would remind you that the report works fine if you go to the control panel and double click it to get a preview and then print it. So I haven't figured why it doesn't pass the correct info through the print in x-basic.

                      Jeffrey,

If you're inviting me to dig into it further when you haven't looked at what I did already... I'll pass. Maybe someone else can figure it out for you.

No I am not. I have since looked at your solution. I was just pointing out what I had already done and that it seemed odd that it would work one way and not the other.

                        Thanks again for the help.
