Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Need Lookup Table?

    Newbie alert.
With the help of this forum, I have learned how to do a working table lookup in a form, but I have a related question.

I can see where I would want to use a table lookup when multiple values are needed in a record and the multiple values will be reused later. For example, with an attorneys table, a case_attorneys linking table, and a case table. There can be several attorneys in each case, and the attorneys will be in many cases. Therefore, it makes sense to have them available on a pick list once they have been entered into the attorney table.

But what about where multiple values are needed in a record, but there is no need to reuse them later in other records. For example, there can be several plaintiffs in a case, but I will probably not need to reuse those same plaintiffs in other cases, so having a pick list would just be a distraction, since the values nearly always need to be typed in individually. Should I still be using a linking table or is some other approach preferable?

Many thanks. The people on this forum are fantastic.

For the plaintiffs, I'd forego the lookup table field rule, and rely on the user to enter them into a child table, linked one to many to the case record.

      Bob,

I am not quite clear on what your asking.

A lookup is meant to look up existing values either based on a table or pre defined list.

If "since the values nearly always need to be typed in individually", then why use the lookup at all??

If you want to use a lookup, but only include certian "previous values", then just filter the lookup.

More and/ or better info will be helpful to answer your question.

        RE: Need Lookup Table?

        Tom,

Yep, that worked fine. If I could ask a followup question ...

I now have a set of tables with Case_Header as the primary, with a one to many link to Parties (since there can be many parties in a case), and a one to many link between Parties and lookup table Party_Lawyer, which itself has a one to many link to Lawyers. Everything seems to work fine, except that it is confusing to have the parties in one browse window and the attorneys in a separate browse window (using the lookup). Is there any way I can get the two browses locked together in the same browse window, or anything equivalent?

        Thanks again.

          Bob,

Your lookup tables do not have to be in the set. Indeed, it's often best if they're not. -- tom

            Tom,

If you don't mind, could you explain why the lookup tables are best left out of the set. Also, would taking the lookup tables out of the set help me achieve my goal of putting party info and their lawyer info in the same line of an imbedded browse in a form?

            Thanks.

              Bob,

Suggest you study an article found at www.learn alpha.com called something like "Simplify your applications". It discusses the problems engendered by complex sets, especially for data entry in a network environment.
