Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Follow / Track Changes

I noticed that there is a follow_changes option on the built in menu, under "Records / Advanced" for a Form View Menu.

Is this so a user can track data entry changes like you can in word? or is is track system changes, ie forms, etc.

Anyone know how to utilize this tool?

Still hoping to find someone that knows how the Track/follow changes built in toolbar feature works. Any ideas? THANKS

      RE: Follow / Track Changes

Lynda, I've been using A5 since version 1 came out and I still don't understand what that feature does. However, based on the huge number or responses to your question, maybe you and I are the only ones who don't understand it. ;)

I can tell you that it won't help you track changes. If you want to do that, I'd recommend looking up the Audit Trail feature. It's in the documentation. Here's the first part of the text:

Alpha Five writes out an ASCII file which is an audit trail of all changes made to a record. The audit trail shows the date and time of the change, the original value in the field, and the new value in the field.

To turn on the audit trail feature, you put the command: Addin.run("audit_trail") in the record's CanSaveRecord event. Also, if you want to keep track of deleted records, put Addin.run("audit_trail_deleteRecord") in the record's CanDeleteRecord event.

The output text file is named something like "TableName>-audit_trail.txt

        RE: Follow / Track Changes

Follow Changes/Enters is for browses. If you check it when you change a record in a browse and save it the browse will repaint with your record as the first record at the top of the window. If you un check it the record will remain in the same place in the window unless you change the field that the current index is based on. Than the record you changed will move to it's correct place in the index and the next row will be the current record. Clear as mud?

          RE: Follow / Track Changes

This might be of interest to me, when my software starts up I make the user log in and their operator_id is held in a global variable

If one of the fields in the record was a called 'operator' and was a calculated field that was contained the value of the global variable (by a UDF that returns the value of the variable), then every time a change is made to the field, then the value field(s) changed as well as the operator_id would be written to the Audit File, and presumably I could then produce some sort of form that can load the audit trail data into a temporary file so that it can be interogated ?

Allen, thanks. I've been curious about this, too.

              RE: Follow / Track Changes

Well, gee, that explains why some users complain about the browse "jumping" to the current record, while others can't see the problem. Some call it a critter, and here it is a selectable option. I never knew that. Thanks Allen.

                RE: Follow / Track Changes

Ok Allen, that may be how it is intended to work, but I can't get it to do anything. First, I can't "select" it in any context, and if I try to "click" it, nothing happens. Maybe I am looking at the wrong mud. Ideas?

I've also wondered about this for ever. Funny. Everyone thinks they're the only one in the dark!

I am still in the dark. As far as I can see, it doesn't do anything, other than start a conversation.

I did not intend to upset anyone with the clear as mud comment I read and reread my post and wasn't sure that I understood it my self. Jerry it seems that the follow changes/enters is broken. I don't know when it stopped working.

Yeah, it used to work as described above. But I stopped using it a long time ago due to some design changes I made.

When did it start working? I can't get it to "do" anything. From your post, I can only assume that at one time it did do "something". I also can't find any reference to it in any of the documents.
