Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: The Disappearing Browse?

Darn, now I've really go to slow down...

    I've been meaning to say:

Have successfully built a 3 tier set and found that quick sort tool and running quick sorts via action scripts from buttons seem to work fine PROVIDED the link between parent and child is a single field, and PROVIDED the link between child and grandchild is a single field.

Sorry for the multiple posts. -- tom

      RE: The Disappearing Browse?

      Glen,

      I recommend you try it.

I've successfully used quicksort in both child and grandchild browses where the form uses single field links at each tier.

        RE: The Disappearing Browse?

        Tom,

Can you give a short example of how tables in a set could be linked by an expression instead of a single field so I can understand this ?

        Regards,

        Marcel

          RE: The Disappearing Browse?

          BINGO

Created a new field on each of the tables where a linking expression had been used and made it a calculated field to contain that link. Edited the set to use these fields and not a linking expression and now the form behaves just perfectly!!!!

Tom, thanks for your persistance... again!

Aaron & Selwyn..... is this an issue that can be resolved?

          Regards

            RE: The Disappearing Browse?

            Marcel,

            Edit a set linkage.
When you check the available choices for parent key and for child key you'll find that 'expression' is available, in addition to the field names themselves.

If you choose 'expression' you open the expression builder dialog where you can build something to suit.

            A common choice might be

            LASTNAME + FIRSTNAME

This 'expression' could be used as a multi-field link in your set. It's this sort of compound linkage that I've discovered seems to be related to the disappearing rows about which we've been talking in this thread.

              RE: The Disappearing Browse?

              Marcel

For 2 of the tables in my set the parent table (years) had 2 fields (both character) called Teamkey and Year

The same 2 fields appear in the table (movement) so in the set builder I used an expression (it is the first item on the drop down list before the fields) to create an expression:

              alltrim(teamkey)+alltrim(year)

All I have now done is created an additional (calculated)field on each table and filled it with that calculation!

              Hope this makes sense

                RE: The Disappearing Browse?

                Glen,

In my experience, a multi-field key works like this:

                1) first field used to establish the link
                2) second field will determine the sort / display order

Perhaps QuickSort destroys the sort / display order causing the form to be unable to show the records.

This is speculation at this point.

I'm glad you got it going without having to use multiple sets and forms.

                  RE: The Disappearing Browse?

                  Tom, Glen,

Thanks for explaning this to me.
However, in my sets I do not use this, but simply use fields to connect.
                  The problem occurs here too.
With me it occurs in a set like this:

                  1.0.0. Table 1
                  1.1.0. > Table 2 one-to-many
                  1.1.1. >> Table 3 one-to-one
                  1.1.2. >> Table 4 one-to-one
                  1.1.3. >> Table 5 one-to-one
                  1.2.0. > Table 6 one-to-one
                  1.3.0. > Table 7 one-to-one

In my form based on this set rows also disappear in the embedded browse.
Could the one-to-many linkage have something to do with that ?

                  Regards,

                  Marcel

                    Marcel,

I can't answer your question. My testing has been limited to a three layer set, using two one-to-many links in a parent, child, grandchild arrangement. In my work I try very hard to avoid complex sets such as you describe, especially in apps that will be used over networks.
