Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Populate a table

    I need to do 2 things....

    1) Initially populate a table (schedule) for one year using the date as an index.

    Structure:
    Sched_Date Date Indexed
    Sched_DOW Char Calc CDOW(Sched_Date)
    Sched_Event_1 Num 2,0
    Sched_Event_2 Num 2,0
    Sched_Event_3 Num 2,0

    Events will be posted, by type, as appts are made by date. It is possible to schedule more than 1 event/appt.
    Only one person doing data entry at a time; so no locking problems...

    2) As each calendar month 'expires', build next year's same month.

    Always have 12 months of schedule time available to fill in.......

    I would imagine, that the next calenday year month -- would be some kind of a subset of the full year build???

    Any help would be appreciated.

    RE: Populate a table

    ooops--- forgot that some events will span more than one day but that is most probably a whole different script that has to be run from the appointment table data entry...

    Just info about the total picture...

      RE: Populate a table

      Dick,

      You can use a While .. End While loop to add records to the table.

      [code]
      'assume vdBeginDate holds a valid 01/01 date for given year
      'assumes vdEndDate holds a valid 12/31 for a given year

      tbl = table.open("Yourtablename")
      vCurrDate = vdBeginDate
      While vCurrDate

        RE: Populate a table

        I'd like to follow you around for a day or two....
        You must have an 'interesting' time....

        There are actually only 6 events possible and since each has an impact on the workload for the group, each will have a field that will contain a 'counter' that is updated each time that an appt is made.....

        This particular phase of the 'system' is only used as an approximation of time and space req'd.

        I will print out this script and try it later today..

        thanx much

          RE: Populate a table

          tried to write up this script in the code editor.

          added 2 lines at the start
          vdbegindate=01/01/2004
          vdenddate=12/31/20004

          then copied the script exactly
          after the end while line the following error showed up
          ERROR:mismatched end of loop or if-block...

          I'm lost...

            RE: Populate a table

            If I try to dim vdbegin and end I get errors

            dim vcCurrDate as C this is OK
            dim vdBeginDate as D gets a wrong type error????

            I really do not want to digress from building the rest of the db to learn XBasic.... at least not right now..

            Have so many 'wild' ideas on construction of sets floppin' around now and I need to spend time getting them up and running.

            I'll look at this later

              Richard,

              Here's an example to help you along the way. Was prepared hurriedly so let me know if you need explanations for any of the code.

              Unzip the attachment to an empty folder. There's just one table and it has just one form. On that form there's just one button. This button runs a script to prompt the user for a 4 digit 'year' and then adds records for each date in that year to the table.

                Still haven't received the WinZip Software, expect it Mon or Tue...
                Tried again with
                dim vdBeginDate as D
                dim vdEndDate as D
                dim vCurrDate as D

                Set vdBeginDate = "01/01/2004"
                Set vdEndDate = "12/31/2004"

                Then copied your above script EXACTLY...

                Error : Line 16 Column 1 Expected value....

                      RE: Populate a table

                      now you've even got me confused

                      "set" is not part of xbasic as an assignment statement

                      Set vdBeginDate = {01/01/2004}
                      Set vdEndDate = {12/31/2004}

                      could be

                      Let vdBeginDate = {01/01/2004}
                      Let vdEndDate = {12/31/2004}

                      or

                      vdBeginDate = {01/01/2004}
                      vdEndDate = {12/31/2004}
                      There can be only one.
