Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I'm trying to connect A5V5 to an AS/400 via ODBC to import a database file, I go thru the process of import, ODBC import genie, On a select database type to convert, I choose ODBC data source, I use the IP# of the AS/400 but it comes up with a message that it doesn't recognize the format, with that it shows all the files on the AS/400, once I choose a file and ready to finish it gives an error:
    couldn't find file qs36f.mdb

Does anybody know what I'm missing ?

    Thanks

    RE: [email protected]

I have just done exactly this for a project to provide an archive database from an AS/400 application. I got exactly the same problem, and I think it is something to do with driver for the as/400 DB.

What I did to get round this as I have used this before to access data on the 400 is to set up an access database with linked tables to the as/400. Then import the table into A5 by specifying the access database which in turn links to the as/400. The only problem I had with this was the definition of the fields seemed to automatically add decimal places for numeric fields but I imported the data and then changed the structure.

It is best to setup the access db and test that the data is displayed first.

Alternatively if you don't have access is to use client access to transfer the file to a csv and then import using this method.

    Good luck.

PS If you need help on the odbc driver config for access just reply back.

      Thanks trevor.
I never used access before, for some reason I never attempted to use, in this case I might have to.
I appreciate any help on setting the ODBC between access and the AS/400.

        RE: [email protected]

Have you got access and client access on your machine?

        If so

        1. Goto ODBC data sources.
        2. Choose system dsn tab
        3. Click add.
        4. choose the client access odbc driver then click finish.
        5. On the next screen give you setting a resonable name and complete the system name of your as/400.
        6. choose the server tab and enter the library of your database. this should be it.
        7. go into access and create a new db
        8. choose add table and then choose linked table.
        9. select your newly created odbc data source and after a few moments you should get a list of all your tables.
        10. choose the table and you should then create the link.

The double click on the table, and you should get the data returned in a browse object. make sure you choose a small table to start with to proove the links etc.
