Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Browse Create_Columns, How?!

Has anybody ever used this embedded browse method?
    FormPointer.browse1.Create_Columns(C table_or_set,C columns[,P style]).
I can only get it to create one new column, and it deletes all existing columns.
I want to dynamically add columns to an embedded browse, as the user adds new field to the base table.

    John,

According to the docs this method for the embedded browse control is used to initialize the browse object itself, so I'm not surprised you're unable to use it to modify an existing browse control. Unfortunately the docs don't give an example of how it might be used to create a new browse with multiple columns.

I'm curious why you would want your use to be able to do this sort of thing. If you tell us what you have in mind maybe we can suggest another approach.

This function is for internal Alpha Five use only and was not intended for use by application developers.

        RE: Browse Create_Columns, How?!

        Thank you Tom

        Here is the scenario:
~ The user requires a new data field, the software supplies such a capability via dialog box and .FIELD_ADD()
~ The Name the user supplies is NOT the actual fieldname. The actual field name is computed and stored along with the user-supplied name. Thus minimizing restrictions on the Name the user desires (length, special, characters etc..)
~ The users field Name is displayed in GUI objects, not the actual field name that is computed. Ive built record-list objects (via keylist_build() ) that provide this capability. But a Browse object would be superior to this method because a browse has many, many more features built-in (resize, rearrange, mark, delete etc..)
~ So if I can add a field to a table then I should be able to correspondingly add a field to an embedded Browse object. I think this should be a fundamental capability.
~ I could use the default browse in a form, yet I do not think I can rename the column-titles to the user-supplied Name.
~ Having written all this, maybe Ive worked myself into a corner easing the restriction on the names of fields.

Just dawned on me to use either a copy or append operation to create a table/default-browse with the desired fields.

            Solution

            1. Create a copy operation
            2. Compute the actual fields names, and a variable QtyFields (quantity of fields )
            3. run the Copy.field{number} variable in a loop, specify the computed field names; index up to QtyFields
            4.run the copy operation
            5. open the default browse for the new table, store its handle into a variable "bws"
            6. use bws.{computed field name}.object.column_title="DESIRED FIELD NAME" to change the names

                Ed:

Like Jon I had experimented with this method and was disappointed, like John, to find that the method wasn't supported.

Right now I can apply user-selected colors and column titles just fine with code, but get an "Error 1" when I try to build an entire browse via code.

Would you happen to know if this method - or any new methods in the new browse object - will allow us to build browses "on the fly"?
