How to check if file exist?

Anybody knows how to check if file xxxx.doc exist in folder xxxx?

Also how can we obtain the number of files present in a folder?

Try this for the first part. From the chm
FILE.EXISTS()

Syntax

Logical File_Found_Flag = FILE.EXISTS( Filename as C )

Argument
Description

Filename
The name of the file.


Description

The FILE.EXISTS() method determines if a file exists on disk. A logical result of TRUE (.T.) is returned if the supplied Filename is found.

Example

This script checks to see if the defaults file already exists. If not, the defaults file is created.

filename = "c:\a5\defaults.txt"

result = file.exists(filename)

if result = .F. then

answer = ui_msg_box("","File doesn't exist. Create a new one? ", UI_YES_NO)

'user answered "No".

if answer = UI_NO_SELECTED then

end

end if

file_pointer = file.create(filename, FILE_RW_EXCLUSIVE)

file_pointer.write("Defaults:")

else

end

end if

file_pointer.flush()

file_pointer.close()

For the second part

substitute your desired directory for my "a5.Get_Path()"
file_list = filefind.get(a5.Get_Path() + "\*.*", FILE_FIND_NOT_DIRECTORY, "N")

initialize a "big" array, bigger than the number of files you are likely to find
dim test[12000] as p

fill the array with file names
test.initialize_properties("name",file_list)

set some variable to be equal to the index position of the first empty element -1
endlist = test.first_empty()-1

do what you will with the variable
? endlist
= 1472.000000

Hello Claudio,

Not to belabor this as you've already received great answers.

Check out the filefind.get() function. Lets say that you want to check for the existance of a file named "MyFile.txt" in the C:\A5v5 directory:

vReturn = filefind.get("C:\A5v5\MyFile.txt")
ui_msg_box("Found File?",vReturn)

If you want to know how many file are in the C:\A5v5 directory:

vReturn = filefind.get("C:\A5v5\*.*")
vLines = line_count(vReturn)
ui_msg_box("The number of files are:",str(vLines))
