Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    "Record X of Y" on form ?

    This should be easy...

    The system fields will let you drag and drop Page X of Y from the drag drop list onto your reports.

    How can I get Record X of Y on my forms?

    Form based on table or set, or appropriate to either?

    X of Y based on table/set total records or currently filtered records?

    Interesting challenge.

            Yes, most excellent Charlie,

            But here's another twist. Records are sorted by delivery date not by entry order.

            So how to get the sorted recno value?

              Another good one but still cant get around the Filtered number of records in the browse and the Sort order issues.

              So I'm trying to get X of Y in the browse NOT the table and in the current sort order.

                RE:

                You could make a calculated field in the browse that used the running_count with a group parameter and that would give you the relative record number of the child record for a certain parent.
                Then you could use table_count function with a filter for the parent ID for the total records belonging to a parent.

                Be prepared for a slowdown by using these things in browses when there are lots of records.

                  The Solution

                  OK, the solution:

                  Where the tablename is MAIN - using a calc field and a global varible "recno" with the expression " count(count(Var->recno,GRP->MAIN,GRP->Grand)) " gives the accurate number of records in the filtered browse.

                  Using a calc field with the expression
                  " run_count(Datefield) " Gives the sorted position of the selected record in the browse. Actually you can count any field that is filled in all the records.

                  One very currious bug though perhaps someone can explain. The function run_count() wont count the last record at EOF. Say I have 26 records - as I select one after another radomly the position number shown is accurate however select the very last record and the position count will not change as if it is not recognized. Go figure ?

                  Cheers

                    RE: The Solution

                    Here is another way to get the no. of recs in your query:

                    tbl = table.current()
                    query.description = ""
                    query.order = ""
                    query.filter = "whatever"
                    query.options = ""
                    Q = tbl.query_create()
                    '************************No of records
                    nrecs = Q.records_get()

                    The function run_count() wont count the last record at EOF.

                    If i remember correctly, Selwyn said this function was only for reports :(

                      "If i remember correctly, Selwyn said this function was only for reports "

                      The docs say that count(), run_count(), total(), run_total(), average()......... all those functions taking the group parameter.......

                      are report writer functions, not for field rules, may function elsewhere, not supported other than reports.

                        Stan,
                        I'm not sure that's true of run_count.
                        I seem to remember Selwyn using that in an embedded browse when he showed a solution for alternating line colors.It's certainly true of some functions - mrecno() comes to mind

                          RE: The Solution

                          From the current online .chm......

                          Note: This function is a report writer function, not intended for table level field rules or other expressions. While the function may perform in some areas outside of the report writer, its use there is not supported.

                          Case of do as I say, not as I do, I suppose.......

                          That's not exactly fair, as I lobbied to have the note added to the documentation. I believe that those (grp-> "group") functions perform quite adequately on forms where:

                          The Group and Sub-Group are optional parameters that may or may not be required, depending upon the context of the summary calculation. Possible values for GRP->Group and GRP->Sub-Group include:

                          GRAND
                          The name of the current table
                          The name of a table in the current set.
                          The name of a grouping level that is defined in a report layout

                          The documentation never spelled out the intended/proper/??? usage of these functions and posters were frequently bemused when they didn't work in field rules and other expressions.
                          There can be only one.
