Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha5 Drops out.

    New user needs help.

Has anyone else had the alpha5 program drop out and you end up staring at the desktop? It mostly happens when I am in the process of adding action scripting. I am using XP and I checked the event viewer and found no application problems. I must say I do not like this trait in the program. If it is going to crash I want it to crash, hang or do something else, not just drop out like it was never in use.

    Thanks in advance

    RE: Alpha5 Drops out.

    Bruce,

    I haven't seen this before.

Perhaps others will have additional ideas, but to me it sounds almost like one user is starting the program, and then another logs in on the same machine. It's the only way I know to get to a clean desktop, without evidence in the taskbar that the original program is still running. i.e. without minimizing the program. Of course, this sequence would not normally occur during a design session.

      RE: Alpha5 Drops out.

      Bruce,

I too am a new user, purchased A5 1 week ago. I was following the tutorial in the "Getting Started with Aplha Five" book. About 2 hours into it, I had the same thing happen. "Poof"... and the screen went to the desktop?

Absolutely no errors or indicators of any kind.

Stumped... I launched A5, re-opened the tutorial. Took a look to see what I had lost. Thankfully, I had only lost the edits since my last save.

It has not re-occured since. But I am saving my work frequently just in case. FYI, I did install the latest update, running Build 1498 1051 as of 11/28/03.

        Bruce,

I should mention that my problem occured on a non-network, stand alone machine.

          RE: Alpha5 Drops out.

This happens during the design stage. I must admit that it really bugs me when it happens. Like what happened? Not even trace evidence. I do have the latest build and I am on a network, however the computer that I am using has the only alpha running. It is a mystery to me and I guess to everyone else.

          Appreciate the help and input

          Thx

            Bruce,

            Welcome.

What you describe is so peculiar. I use the program (running applications built in it and building new ones) almost continuously and I have never had anything like you describe.

I have 4 machines in my life--currently xp pro, formerly w98. Also about 35 users although they do no design work.

I can only conclude there is some weird setup or hardware issue. Whatever it is is must be a low-probability event as to the best of my knowledge it has not been reported prior to this thread.

I get Un-handled events and I thought maybe it might have been one of those that processed through without announcement. It just kind of startles me when it happens. I was hoping that maybe someone else has had the problem, however I would not exclude a hardware problem with this Gateway computer. It has been glitchey since the day I received it. I do better with the rest of my machines however. Figured it was worth a try to see if someone else had similar problems. Or solved the problem by replacing a piece of hardware.

              Thanks for the input.

                RE: Alpha5 Drops out.

                Bruce,

Hardware conflicts with Alpha Five are occasionally reported. Most seem to involve two subsystems:

                1) video display adapter - memory conflicts - cured by updating the video drivers, or reducing or eliminating 'hardware acceleration'. Some adapters apparently use main system memory as a cache or something to improve video performance. A few folks seem to have had trouble when this feature of their adapter was enabled.

                3) Windows printer drivers - Haven't heard much about these conflicts lately, but for a while there were a bunch of reports from folks who had newer HP printers (including all in one devices). Updated drivers helped in some cases. In others folks had to install alternate (older) compatible drivers.

Don't know if either of these fit your Gateway situation but thought I'd mention it.

I will take a harder look at the issues that you brought up. Thanks for the input.

To add to Tom's comments, be sure that a default printer is specified for the computer. Some users have reported strange behavour if no printer is configured.

                      RE: Alpha5 Drops out.

While I can't help with this problem I thought I would add my 2 cents worth by telling about a similar(?) exprience I had but with a different outcome.

About a week ago I had an occassion to use an Alpha-5 application I created a year or so ago. It is on a stand-alone machine with Win98 OS. After closing the application I needed to check some dates on some of the files. When I tried to view the directory containing the Alpha Five application via Explore the directory was empty as was the runtime directory! As far as I know, no other programs on this machine were affected. If I hadn't seen this myself I don't think I would believe this could happen...especially to two different directories at the same time.

I suspected a virus but could not find any via an antivirus program. I reinstalled the application and no one has reported a problem since the reinstall.

Perhaps it was just some weird computer glitch that we will never be able to explain.
