Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    I can't seem to get a simple expression!

    Sorry for asking all the "dumb" questions folks ... but here I go again.

    I'm working with a two table set ... "parents" being the parent table ... and "children" being the child table.

    I want a report of those parents whose children have different surnames from their own.

    Easy ... right?

    Well ... in the report, I have defined the records as being the following:

    last_namechildren->last_name

    I thought that meant that "last_name" is not equal to "chidren->last_name". However, it's not working to show only those children whose parent's surname is different. *sigh*

    Is there a better expression I should be using? [Of course there MUST be since mine isn't working!]

    Why do I always get stuck on the easy stuff?

    Thanks

    Mary

    What defines a family in your set? Is there a family id?

    If so your report should group on family id and filter on

    last_namechildren->last_name.
    There can be only one.

      Hi Stan,

      The set is defined by an "employee_id" field.

      The report has a group break on "employee id" and an order within that group break of "last_name".

      I have the "select records" feature set to

      last_namechildren->last_name

      But when I preview the report, it gives me those employees whose children have the same last names as they do rather than the employees who have children with different surnames.

      Thanks

      Mary

        you may have inadvertently checked "exclude" in the filter instead of "include"

          RE: I can't seem to get a simple expression!

          Hi Martin,

          I wish it were that simple ... but there is no "include" or "exclude" selection on the "select records" section of my report.

          This seems like it should be SO SIMPLE.

          I will add, however, that the expression

          last_namechildren->last_name

          does return a "false"

          Is there another way to phrase such an expression ... something like ...

          "exclude all records where last_name=children->last_name" ?

          Thanks

            well - this isn't very scientific, but try saying just the opposite x=y instead of xy to test.

            I vaguely remember this problem. But can't remember the reason for it. I also vaguely remember the exclude option, but now I can't find it. Oh well.

              Oh I feel SO STUPID!

              A very simple check on the actual fields that were in the form gave me my answer.

              In the detail section, I had placed the parent->last_name instead of the children->last_name.

              I changed the field to the proper one ... and low and behold ... the form works perfectly!

              I'm sorry ... but that's just a reminder to make sure that one should really check everything, no matter how basic, before one assumes that something isn't working properly!

              Thanks for all the help!

                okay - the include/exclude option appears if you use the "Create filter using the genie" button - but the filter then looks like this:

                .not. ((customer_number=1))
