Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

RE: Dear Alpha Please - .mpx

Nothing in registry on several diff. machines. Nothing in full ver folders. However in RT lots of *.mpx files in program folders. Could this be a bug?

Peter, I found scores and scores of entries for MPX files under the Alpha Five 4.0 and Alpha Five 5.0 keys under Alpha Software under HKey_current_ user. I'm using Win98SE

        Dick,

On average I find 5 to 15 $$----.MPX files daily in my A5 folder. This is without crashes etc. I've just gotten in tha habit of deleting them every couple of days.

Don't know if this is any help but I am using XP and don't have any mpx files in the registry - zillions of entries for tables etc but no entries for mpx files. I do however run Alpha Five from a desktop ICON that has the Start In paramter set to c:\temp - I found this neccessary in order for record locking to work and for mpx files not to be plasted all over the desktop during operation - whether this has anything to do with no mpx file entries in the registry I don't know - but thought it worth a mention.

Its really odd that some people are getting a lot in the registry and not others. I can see getting them in the program or data directories but not the registry. Perhaps someone from Alpha can explain why they would be there. Personally I dislike the registry because it seems the source of all kinds of problems and can be rather cryptic, which I guess is intentional.

RE: Dear Alpha Please - .mpx

You may have hit on something. I, too, start all my apps from icons (desktop or start menu) although my Start-in folder nearly always the data folder. The number of .mpx files is minimal even without using my Del_dollars script.

I once tried using another folder just to see what would happen and it kept filling up with copies of my data dictionaries. Using the data folder as the Start-in has eliminated that.

I also find it curious that nobody other than Richard Blanchard has commented on the Del_dollars script I attached. Do people still find it useless? It doesn't work? Have a better method? Think it was a stupid idea? Not care? Other?

                Hi Cal

I think the script is a good idea - I have not tried it yet but will do in due time. My apps leave behind a huge number of mpx files in the A5 directory (and not due to crashes). Thanks.

I found it extremely useful - I had used a much simpler version in 4.0-4.5, but since I'm now working on an app for a network, I have installed yours and it works perfectly! Thanks a lot.

                    Thanks for the message.

If you can tell me how to repeat the problem, we will fix it.

I just ran a test, and in my test the .mpx files (which are temporary query files) WERE being deleted.

this is how i ran the test.

                    1. i created a new folder on my machine called c:\a5mpx
                    2. i started a5, went to view/settings/directories and set the private folder to c:\a5mpx. also made sure that "delete mpx" was set to yes on the view/settings/queries tab.

                    3. exited and restarted a5.

                    4. opened multiple databases and did multiple queries on different tables. checked the c:\a5mpx folder. saw multiple .mpx files being created.

                    5. quit a5. then checked c:\a5mpx.

all of the .mpx files were now deleted.

if you can document a set of actions that result in .mpx files NOT being deleted and we can repeat it, we will fix the problem ASAP.

p.s. my test confirmed that both the full version and runtime work identically (as they should, since the code is the same).

                    thanks.

Selwyn, if you read this again, is the "Delete mpx files" now supposed to delete old files that may have been left by a previous crash? (I could check but I'm assuming you would have the answer without running more tests.) If not, is there a plan to do that in the future?

                            Selwyn,
I just ran a little test based upon the Alpha Sports Database. While looking through the program, I noticed that there are no GLOBAL variables. I ran reports and other such things and my mpx files were deleted as they are supposed to. Great. I then, just for the heck of it, added a global variable to the Main Menu form. I didn't do anything with the variable other than assign it a default value. After opening the form and then playing with some reports, I closed the database and exited Alpha 5. Well would you believe that there were some of those pesky mpx files left over.

I think our problem may be related to global variables. I use a number of them in my applications.

                            Try it.

                              That's quite interesting.

I must say that since the last 2-3 builds I have many more of them than previously.
