Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Is my script genie corrupt?

ON ONE OF MY COMPUTERS, the script genie won't let me choose "Another Form or Browse Window" when working with the "Enter a New Record" command. In action scripting, when I add the command "Enter a New Record" and I hit the drop down arrow in the "Enter a New Record in Which Form/Browse Window?" box the ONLY choice is "Current Form..."

I've made sure that the form I want to enter the new record on is open before I begin the action script.

The error is reproduceable in Alpha Sports on this one computer.

On my other computer, it works as it should on both my personal database and in Alpha Sports. I am able to choose "Another Form or Browse Window" -- even if the form I want to enter a new record in is NOT open when I start the script.

I've uninstalled and then re-installed A5 on the computer that's misbehaving, and it still doesn't work.

It's REALLY making it difficult to add a Main Menu to this database when I can't use the "Enter a New Record" command to choose a form other than the Main Menu itself!

What can I do to fix this? Please help!

    Charlain,

Most would do their development on a single machine, and then copy the app to the target workstation.

I wonder if the troubled system is running low of windows resources? Try exiting from all other windows apps before beginning a design session. What percentage of available resources do you have before beginning the design session ?

RE: Is my script genie corrupt?

      Hi Tom,

After booting up, I have 77% resources available. After starting A5, it drops to 57%. Is that enough? I have 256K RAM, latest build of A5, and the OS is Win98SE.

As for developing on one machine, I agree that is probably ideal. In my situation, it works best for me to keep my works in progress on my flash key drive, and work on them from home & from work.

Thanks, as always for your help.

57% is getting marginal, however 77% at startup indicates that you might has a number of programs loading at startup, too. From a number of experiments, I have found that Alpha usually takes about 15% or the resources when opened. Check the task manager and see what is running after startup. Try closing a few of then unneeded programs and see if the problem goes away.

RE: Is my script genie corrupt?

          Hi Charlain,

I find that the only things needing to be loaded to run your machine efficiently are systray, explorer and your virus program, everything else eats up your RAM. When my system boots up system resources show 94% available. Two of the things that eat your resources alive are the number of colors set in your display card and the number of fonts that you load at startup. Remember if you are running 98 or ME total resources is 128K regardless of how much RAM you have installed, 2K, NT and XP are different animals and don't usually have resource problems.

          Have fun,

RE: Is my script genie corrupt?

            Charlain:

You can see what programs are running at startup by typing "msconfig" in the start-run command box in Windows. The last tab on the right is "startup", I believe. From there you can pick and choose what you want to start. You may be surprised to see programs in there that you may have uninstalled that still have a residual footprint. This will free up more resources for you.

Unfortunately, the memory area that is the real problem in Win9x with this type of stuff cannot be changed by one of the thousands of "memory managers" out there that claim to help your available resources. The area I'm talking about is called the GDI memory area, and it is responsible for a lot of the stuff going on behind the scenes.

Give MSCONFIG a try and see if that helps.

RE: Is my script genie corrupt?

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I'm not sure low resources is going to be the problem. My other computer (also Win 98 SE) on which A5 works right is at 43% when A5 is running.

I didn't have time today to delve more into this, but will try to free up as much memory as I can and will let you all know.

              Thanks again,

RE: Is my script genie corrupt?

After optimizing my system, I now have 71% system resources free while running A5.

Unfortunately, I am still having the problem. If any of you have any more suggestions, I'd love to see them. This is really causing a delay in getting this database up & running!

                Thanks,

                  Charlain,

Consider posting your database here so we can look over your shoulder.

I just built an action script that opens a form, and then enters a new record in it. No problem. Whether the called form was open or not.

Screen shots are in the attachment.

Maybe there's something you're doing that's throwing Alpha Five for a loop.

                      Charlain,

That's similar to what I'm doing, but it differs in one respect. Don't know if it's significant.

When you pick the action 'Enter New Record' your Category is 'All Actions'.

I first select the category 'Records', then the Action 'Enter New Record'.

Can't see why this would make a difference, but thought I'd mention it.

I'm running Build 1466.1044 on a Windows 98 Second Edition box.

                        Hi Tom,

I've tried it both ways -- from the All Actions and from the Record Actions, with the same frustrating result.

I just downloaded a trial version onto another computer in the office (also Win 98SE) and upgraded it to 1044 and it works just like it is supposed to :(

I'm thinking that the file that drives the genie is corrupt, and it must not have been replaced when I uninstalled & then reinstalled.

I'm going to email Selwyn and see if he has any ideas about this.

I really appreciate all the help you've given me.

Here's some info on running the slideshow attached in the previous post:

Either mouse button will advance a slide or you can use the Nav bar at the bottom.

To exit, hit ESC or click the "X" on the nav bar.

Charlain, I'm fresh out of new ideas. Still think it would be worthwhile for you to post a working model of your database so that we can verify whether it behaves correctly on different equipment. who knows, we might even spot something that could explain what you're seeing.
