Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Action Scripts passing a variable between forms

I am a new Alpha 5 home edition user (6 weeks) and rather challenged.

I am building a system to catalogue my wine cellar. I have a main data entry form to enter in new aquisitions to my cellar and this contains a number of fields such as Maker Grape Variety, Region etc. that I have defined with field rules as lookup tables I have also specified that the user can enter new records to these lookup tables.
This works fine, however, what I would like to do is when a new Maker is created in the maker lookup form that when the form is closed and I retun to the main data entry form I can pass back the new maker and fill the Maker field.
I hope this explanation ia adequate, I guess it might be something simple but at my current state of knowledge I would like some help please.

    Regards

    Brian,

not sure what you mean by "when a new Maker is created in the maker lookup form" ???

If your user is working with the main data entry form, and begins a table lookup for the Maker field, the field rule will pop up a dialog box presenting choices from the lookup table. If the user then enters a new record in the lookup dialog box, and then selects it, doesn't the Maker field in the pending record on your main data entry form get updated correctly?

      Brian,

The action you are describing happens automatically, how have you done this on your other lookup fields?

If you look at the lookup field rule, you can select to use your own form rather than the default form. The advantage of this is better control of the form and data entry.

        Hi There,

Its quite easy and you dont need programming to do this. When you create the new "maker" pass this value into a variable.

When you get back to the orinal form have the contents of the variable passed into the field. Check your Actions scripts under variables.

        This should help.

Thanks for the replies you have sent me , my response may be a bit slow as I am in a different time zone in Australia.
I am trying to do what you suggest. I am using my own form to update the "Maker" lookup table and on that form is a button that when it is pressed runs an action script to Save the record in the lookup table, then set a variable to the value of the new "Maker", then close that form to return to the main data entry form and I want to set the field value of "Maker" in the main data entry form to the new "Maker" which I have just created.
But even though I have set the variable to global I dont seem to be able to access it in the main data entry form.

Doesn't the child form also need to have the variable declared as Global?

I solved my problem by using the Genie to create the actions I required on one form which would allow access to the variables then generated the Xbasic code and then edited the code and changed the form name to the one I wanted the varible to be passed

RE: Action Scripts passing a variable between form

Note that some variable action scripts will only create SHARED variables. You need to convert the script to In-line XBasic and then change SHARED to GLOBAL.

Selwyn recommend to me to use XDialog Action Scripts if I wanted to stay with pure action scripting.
