Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Install A5V5 on 2 pc's?

    Good morning,

I'm trying to afford a new computer, and A5v5, etc for use at home and recall seeing something about being able to install A5v5 in a 2nd computer - like a laptop. Most of the work I'll do at the home office will be for my regular job (testing installing apps, colors, screen size...), although I soon hope to be able to buy my own A5v5...

Is installing it at home as simple as that - or is there something else I need to know...like any kinks when the computers aren't the same?

    Thanks!

    Wanda

    HI Wanda,

Should be fine, When you activate A5 on the web they will know it is a 2nd computer. Just be sure the screen resolution is the same as at the office so you wont get any suprises.

Thanks, Marc :) That's what I thought, but wanted to make sure. Thanks, too, for the tag on your website...I'll visit and take a peek :)

Alpha Software allows two unique registrations per single user license. The registration code they give you is based on the name of your computer. Go control panel->Network->identification. There you will see the computer name.

If your home computer and work computer have the same name, they can use the same registration key.

I have registered two computers, one named "main", other named "two".

Recently had a hard drive crash, reloaded everything, named the computer the same, and the registration key went down very smoothly.

Actually - I have two computers named "two", both with A5 on them. One is on a network, other is my laptop. I hardly use them, though.

Thanks, Stephen...hey, if you're not using your laptop much, just pack it up and ship it out here - I'll keep it from getting stiff in the joints!

I find this all very fascinating. I had the same question about using the system on 2 computers in my home office and was required to purchase another site license...although it was discounted to $179. So far I am 4 hours into trying to share data and still getting notes about some .muf file that is not happy.

Disregard - I have been advised that sharing data created by the program requires another site license. So you can have the program on two computers, but you can only share the data by Zip Disks under the 2 machine/single user protocol.

Oh - well that's good to know...so if I install A5V5 at home with the software from work, then I can't take the actual data home and work on it? All I can do is work on designing?

                Hmmm...the plot sickens...I mean thickens...

Wanda, no, I don't think that's what Lanny meant.

Your plan to take a complete copy home, work on it, and then take it back to the office should work fine.

What he was describing is different. He wanted to connect two machines over a network and work on (or use) the same database from both machines simultaneously.

(Lanny, correct me gently if I've got it wrong!)

                      RE: Install A5V5 on 2 pc's?

Yep. I wanted one machine used for data entry and the other to have access to the entered data so I could deal with customers. Simultaneous use was not the goal. But when a machine is being used for data entry, it cannot be used for anything else and so I needed two machines. The distinction escapes me, but I'm used to having a brain cramp.

                        Lanny,

maybe 'simultaneous' is the wrong word. Concurrent use might be a bit closer. The idea is that if you share the same set of data files between two or more machines in real time you need the multi-user (extended) license. Wanda is moving the data files themselves, and is working with separate copies. Her use is neither concurrent, nor shared.

                        Clear as mud, huh ?

I understand the protocol - but the distinction between sharing data via zip disks and sharing data via wire is interesting.
