Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    While question?

when using the following while condition only the the left side of .AND. is working. the right side is not. all values are simple numeric variables. if i reverse them i get the same results so i know each side is a valid condition.

    while vunit_count

    RE: While question?

    Jeff,

that sure sounds odd. I'll do some testing here to see if I can replicate the problem.

In the meantime you can use a nested loop to achieve the same effect:

    [code]
    while vunit_count

      RE: While question?

      Jeff,

As I think more about the problem you're describing I suggest you verify that your table is sorted correctly. For the compound expression you're using to work the table must be sorted using a matching compound expression:

      Code:
      vunit_count + vday_count

      or possibly

      padl(str(vunit_count),10,"0") + padl(str(vday_count),10,"0")

        RE: While question?

        Jeff,

here's an easy example I've whipped up...

it illustrates that compound expressions will
be properly evaluated in While statements.

unzip the attachment to an empty folder.

        Examine the id_temp index expression

        Run the TstWhile script

        View the trace window

Something else must be going on at your end. Either the data is not sorted correctly for the compound expression you want to use, or the script is not incrmenting or fetching the right records...

            Jeff,

One more thing, change this line:

            Code:
            tbl.index_primary_put("id_temps") 'this is key
            to

            Code:
            tbl.index_primary_put("id_temp") 'this is key
cause I mistyped the name of the indextag...

            sorry. -- tom

              hi tom
this is what i ended up doing but still can't figure out why the condition does not work. i read you next post about the sort order but don't think it makes a difference as the values that are loaded into the condition are vairiables. i'm going to look at you example now.
              thanks loads!

                tom,
this is what i actually ended up using that seems to be getting the job done without using an embeded while.

                WHILE .not. tmaster.fetch_eof()
                IF vunit_count >= vnunits .AND. vday_count >= vmaster_days THEN
                GOTO makeappointment
                END IF

kind of an interesting problem, huh?

Jeff, post the details of what you're doing (or better yet the database itself) so we can have a look. Maybe we can explain the results you're seeing.

                    Jeff,

Your snippet is missing an End While, and there's nothing within the loop to step through the records...

Yes, it's probably a bit perverse, but logic puzzles are intriguing to me...

                      Jeff,

It's often inadvisable to 'GOTO' a branch of your code by jumping out of the While loop altogether. This can result in spaghetti code sequences are the devil to debug. Many consider it better form to EXIT the loop, setting a flag on the way, then in the sequence following the loop check the flag... if it's set, then it's ok to GOTO the other branch.

Alpha's expression evaluator is not always the best at precedence of expression operators. Your expression of
