Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Offsite Installation

I am a relatively new AlphaFive user and have a question regarding installing the software on a computer that is off-campus. I tried using the CD to install the software but I got an error message about activation and am confused as to what to do next as this other location has no internet connection [which is how I activated it for the present machine] and I wish to move the Alpha Five to that machine.

    RE: Offsite Installation

    About Activating Alpha Five
    What Is Activation?
Each Alpha Five license allows you to install Alpha Five on one computer (your primary computer), and a personal portable machine that is not connected to the same network as your primary computer (your secondary computer). This allows you to continue working with Alpha Five when you are not at your primary computer.

Activation is the process that ties your copy of Alpha Five to the machine on which it was activated.

Why Does Alpha Software Require Activation?
Activation helps to prevent unauthorized use of Alpha Five. We feel that this is in the best interests of both Alpha Five users, and Alpha Software, because it will allow us to invest more in the future development of Alpha Five.

Is it Difficult to Activate Alpha Five?
Our Activation process is extremely easy. If you activate Alpha Five over the internet, you can complete the process in just a few minutes. If your computer is not connected to the internet, then you can activate Alpha Five by mailing or faxing the Activation Request Form to Alpha Software.

    How does Activation Work?
After Alpha Five is initially installed on a computer it will work without having to be activated for 45 days. This period is referred to as the "grace period". Once the grace period has expired, you will no longer be able to run Alpha Five on that computer until it has been activated.

You can activate Alpha Five on a computer at any point in time, either during the grace period, or after the grace period has expired. To activate, select the Help, Activate Alpha Five, Request Activation Key command and use the internet, mail or fax option to submit your activation request.

When you activate Alpha Five you will receive an "Activation Key" from Alpha Softaware that ties Alpha Five to the compuer on which it was activated. Your computer name is part of this Activation Key. You will then need to select the Help, Activate Alpha Five, Enter an Activation Key command to enter your Activation Key.

NOTE If you choose the mail or fax option to request your Activation Key, be sure to request the Activation Key sufficiently in advance of the expiration of the grace period.

NOTE If you are still evaluating Alpha Five, and think that you might want to take advantage of Alpha's "30 Day Money Back Guarantee", do NOT activate Alpha Five until AFTER you complete your evaluation. Once you submit your activation request to Alpha Software, Alpha Five cannot be returned for credit.

What happens if I get a New Computer?
Your Activation Key is tied to your computer name. If you name your new computer the same as your old computer then you can just reinstall Alpha Five on your new computer and you will be able to re-activate it.

    What is a "Computer Name"?
Every computer has a name. You can see the computer name by right clicking on the "My Computer" icon which is either on your Desktop or in your Start menu. You can also see your computer name by selecting the Help, About Alpha Five command.

What Happens if I Change My Computer Name?
If you change your computer name, and you have already activated Alpha Five on that computer, you will need to contact Alpha Software. Please call (781) 229-4500, or send an e-mail to Customer Service at [email protected]

What happens if my Computer Crashes and I need to reformat my Hard Drive?
Just re-install Alpha Five. As long as you don't change the name of your computer, you will be able to re-activate Alpha Five.

I Purchased a 3-user, or 5-user License. How do I Activate Alpha Five?
You need to intstall Alpha Five on each machine for which you purchased a license, and then activate Alpha Five from each of the machines on which you installed it.

How do I Activate Alpha Five on my Secondary Computer?
Simply install Alpha Five on your secondary computer, and activate it in the same way that you activated Alpha Five on your primary computer.

How does Activation Work with the Runtime Version of Alpha Five?
Activation is not required with the Alpha Five Runtime.

    There can be only one.
