Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Transferring from V4

I just installed Alpha5v5. How do I transfer my v4 databases and tables to v5? I copied my v4 folders to v5 but v5 does not open them.

    RE: Transferring from V4

    John,

A5V5 should open your A5V4 application just fine. What error messages are you getting ?

You don't furnish many details, so this may not apply but the recommended arrangement is for each database to be self-contained within a single folder. If you then copy the contents of the database folder to a new folder, A5V5 should open it just fine. Because A5V5 is having trouble, my guess is that either you're not using A5V4 in the first place, or pieces of your database are scattered across more than one folder.

If this were happening to me I'd go back to A5V4, open the control panel for my database, select tables and sets tab; right click on white space on the tab page; select view; select details. Then carefully examine the 'full name' for each table and set in your database. They should all have the same path, and that path should match the current physical location for the ADB file in your database (this is the default folder for your database). If you find that tables are in folders other than the default folder for the database that would explain your difficulty. The solution for this would be to consolidate everything in your default database folder, after first making several good backups. This is discussed in several threads in the A5V4 forum, you might try searching there.

      Thanks for your reply Tom;

Actually, I got V5 to see my V4 tables. V5 is certainly different from V4. One can't move from a Browse View to a default Form View by clicking on Browse. In fact, I hav'nt yet found out how to get into Form View at all.

          RE: Transferring from V4

I have a suspicion that he has A4. John, if thatbis the case, you won't be able to open the A4 app with A5. However, you can open the tables by creating a new database and then, from the Tables/Setsd tab in the control panel, right click anywhere on the white space and add the tables.

That said, It probably would be a good idea to read up on A5 and become a bit familiar with it before starting any projects. If you try to do things in A5 the way you did it in A4, DON'T!! You will be learning a totally new product, new ways of thinking and doing things.

I am starting with Alpha5v4. I can open my existing .dbf files but I have not been able to get existing .adb names to appear in the startup window to be selected.

                  RE: Transferring from V4

                  John,

There's something missing here. If you have used Alpha Five Version 4 (as opposed to Alpha Four Version 6, et al), there is no problem to open the table or even the application, for that matter.

Can you open the v4.5 apps with v4.5?
Can you open v5 and create a new database?

If the answer is yes to both questions, then you can open v4.5 tables and apps with v5.

Are you sure you're using the right path to the v4.5 tables/apps?

Are you sure you have all the v4.5 app tables/sets in the same folder? If not, that could be the reason.
