Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Upgrade from A5v1 to A5v5

    Hi,

I read in the upgrade policy that the upgrade is searching for the previous installed executable. What if I have an A5v1 and don't want to install this version on my new XP machine. In that case do I have to buy a full version or can this be done by placing the original CD in the cd-reader.

RE: Upgrade from A5v1 to A5v5

    Marcel,

Not sue I understand you question but if you're asking if A5v5 will run from a CD, the answer is "No".

There are 2 versions of A5v5, the developer version and the Home Edition. You do not need a previous version of A5 to install either one.

You do not have to install V1 on the XP machine but it can be done if you want a v1 app to run on v1. Just make sure V1 and V5 istall to different folders.

I can't say for certain, but I would expect you would have to install v1 before Installer program for v5 Upgrade could detect v1 executable.

(And since v1 is '93/'94 vintage, wouldn't it have come on floppy disks ?)

RE: Upgrade from A5v1 to A5v5

Version 5 is NOT an upgrade from version 1. As far as I know, the version 5 upgrade is only applicable to version 4. I am going through the "upgrade" of a very large version 1 application to version 5, and it is not a slam-dunk. There is a lot of code rewriting as well as concept changes.

I can say, though, that version 5 seems cleaner and looks more professional. I would NOT want to go back now.

RE: Upgrade from A5v1 to A5v5

For anyone upgrading to a newer version of product, who does not have the original install disks (or chooses not to reinstall the older version on new hardware) it is suggested that you contact Alpha's Customer Service.

We will be happy to issue a "standalone" version of the upgrade (ie one that will not seek a previously installed exe) at the upgrade price.

RE: transitioning from A5v1 to A5v5.

A5v1 applications with sophisticated "scripting" will need "special handling". In very layman terms, the reason for this being that A5v1 was developed for the Win 3.1 OS; then MS released Windows 95 -quite a seachange.

Although A5v1 code makes the transition, the syntax is not readily recognized by A5v5 so some tweaking of the code needs to take place before A5v5 will recognize the scripts.

Bill Parker's Documentor program can assist in the v1 to v5 transition, in that it will document all the scripts, so that you may address the scripting edits systematically.

Thanks for all those nice people who replied. Jeanette has given me the right answer. I'll contact Alpha's Customer Service in that case I'm going to upgarde. For me there are no scripted application that I have to convert to A5v5. Just easy things.
