Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Pausing Autoexec with a dialog form?

    Pausing Autoexec with a dialog form?

    When I use a Yes, No, Cancel message box, it pauses my autoexec script until the user clicks soemthing. I want options other than yes, no and cancel, so I made a dialog form and inserted the following code (actually more but the rest is not relevant) in my autoexec script:

    :form.view("Start_Form","dialog")
    Start_Form.close()

    If I just run this as a test within the application, it works as expected, opening the form and not moving on until the user selects one of the form's options. However, when run as the opening application's autoexec script it opens the form but does not pause--it just immediately closes it.

    I hope this is not a bug and someone can just explain how to accomplish what I am trying to do.

    I am using 1410-1036.

    RE: Pausing Autoexec with a dialog form?

    Hi Ray,

    I have not tried the form.view method in autoexec, so it may or may not be a bug. But I do use the following method in my autoexec, and it works just like you want it to:

    dim f as p
    f=form.load("Login_Screen")
    f.window_position("center","center")
    f.activate()

    Hope this helps.

      Also, I just tested my script as a dialog, and it DOES NOT work as expected (within autoexec). So try the way I am describing. Good luck.

        Try using script_play("your_startup_script") in your autoexec to see if that works.
        If not, use an xdialog box instead of a dialog form. That works for me.

          Gary, thanks, but for some reason your method does not pause my autoexec. It just keeps going like that damn rabbit on TV!

            RE: Pausing Autoexec with a dialog form?

            Peter,

            Script_play does not pause my autoexec (nor does Gary suggestion).

            An xdialog box does work. Bur I have two questions in that regard:

            1. Is there any way to disable the X in the upper right corner as a way of exiting?

            2. I know how to put some spaces (;s) between xdialog buttons placed vertically. Is there a way to put some space between such buttons when they are placed horizontally (side by side)? I don't like buttons to be right next to one another the way they are in my xdialog, and I would prefer that they be placed horizontally. I have tried everything I can think of--not that that means much!

            Now for an aside for Slewyn if he ever sees this: I have had numerous occassions when all I needed was a message box like the Yes, No, Cancel option (i.e., just 3 choices for the user) but I want the labels to be something other than Yes, No and Cancel (such as Import, Print and View Old Records for an autoexec--I won't go into the details of those 3). This could all be done if we had control of the button labels in ui_msg_box(). Seems like this would be easy.

              Ray

              Here is an xdialog that does what you want

              DIM v as C
              DIM SHARED varC_result as C
              ok_button_label = "&OK"
              cancel_button_label = "&Cancel"
              v = "Information Line"

              varC_result = ui_dlg_box("Alpha Five",{sp=4}
              {endregion};
              %dlg%,

                Thanks Jerry, your help did the trick. For anyone's information (in case they want soenthing simliar) I want the user to have to click only one time, not option X and then OK. With that in mind, the basics of what I want follows (though I can never remember how long lines work on this board):

                heading_string = ""
                ui_dlg_box("Import Options",{sp=4}
                {sp=4}

                {endregion};
                ;
                ;
                ;
                ;
                ;
                ;
                %dlg%,
