Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Labels shrink - don't line up

I'm trying to print standard Avery three across laser sheet labels. I used the Genie to define the labels and put the fields I wanted in the label. So far so good.

The problem is that, while the properties exactly match the label size, page size, label gutters, etc. The actual labels printing on my Brother HL-1650 printer from Win XP are slightly smaller in both dimensions than the properties. The result is that the right column is too far left and the top of each succeeding row gets progressively higher so at the bottom of the label sheet the printed label is above and to the left of the real label. It appears that either Windows or the printer is shrinking the image to fit 8.5x11 inside the printable margins. But this only happens in Alpha 5.5. I printed a 1 inch square grid from CorelDraw and it's almost perfect.

    Any ideas?

    Justus,

It may take a few tries, use plain paper and experiment. Hold the printed sheet against the lable sheet, repeat untill you have made the necessary alterations.

RE: Labels shrink - don't line up

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have been doing that, using different margins, trying different page sizes, restarting from the Genie, etc. I keep getting labels that appear in the design view and in the print preview to be perfect, but when printed don't line up with the actual labels. I've measured the labels to be sure the Avery definition I picked matches the actual labels. It's all correct -- except for the output.

      Any other suggestions?

        Justus,

Can you print labels of the correct dimensions using your word processor? I ask because I'm unfamiliar with your printer, and do not know if it has the physical ability to print close enough to the top and left edges of your sheet to fit the avery layout.

I suggest you adjust the label layout's properties to 'trim' overflow data, rather than 'shrink to fit'. This may provide a clue as to where the problem lies. You'll find this setting on the page tab of the properties dialog.

I also suggest you simplify your label. Reduce it to a single field, centered in the label. Test to see if it prints correctly. If so, add another field, and move them closer to the margins. Test again.

I suspect something in your layout is conflicting with the physical abilities of your printer. My first guess is that your fields are too close to an edge, or are too wide... causing automatic 'shrinking' to occur in order to try to squeeze the data on to the labels.

          Tom,

          Thanks.

I already had the lebel properties set to "Trim". And yes, MS Word prints these labels fine and does WordPerfect.

With Keith and your encouragement I figured out how to make it work. The trick was to change the design to use "Label->Properties->Page:Page Layout=Letter" instead of "Default" and then setting the Top and Left margins to match the label definition (e.g., Top=0.5, Left=0.18 for the Avery 5160).
