Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Extend Trial Period

I know this is a really stupid question but does anyone know if you could get the trial version extended for a few more weeks to evaluate A5 more. My version runs out in 6 days and I still haven't worked with it enough to decide to purchase it or not. Like xbasic, I haven't even had a chance to look at it yet.

Any idea would be much appreciated!!! I know there is no way but just had to ask.

They probably have hundreds of people ask them that every single day but I'll give it a try. All I need is a few more weeks with it.

take it from someone who is a C++, Delphi and access programmer. You cant go wrong with Alpha. I just finished an application that my company is taking nation wide this month. Many of my coharts tried to build the same app in many other products and mine was selected hands down the best by far. When you go with Alpha, there simply is no substitute!

Like you, I am sold, completely on Alpha Five, for lot's of reasons. I love what it can do and I love working with it, it's fun and I'm afraid I am addicted to it. We are switching all of our Access clients that we can and any new clients to Alpha Five. It's a totally awesome product that beats the pants off Access and day!!!

                    RE: Extend Trial Period

I hate it when that happens. I've installed trial-ware on a machine, only to be interrupted by pressing matters, and not been able to get back to it until the trial's expired. These days, the software leaves marks in the registry so you can't just reinstall.

I've been known to discard software on that basis alone. I wish more products used a combination of time elapsed and uses.

Exactly, well put. I didn't have enough time to get through everything and my time is near the end now. I never did get to xbasic or run through some of the techniques they used in their alphasports demo. I did get the demo of MS Visual Studio which gave you 60 days but that turned out that even 60 days wasn't enough because VS is so complex and a nightmare at best. I'll take A% any day......

                        RE: Extend Trial Period

Once you buy A5V5 you'll have another 45 days to play with it before you must activate it. Do not activate it during that period unless you're sure you want to keep it. Alpha's stated policy is that once activated, it may not be returned. But, the chances that you'll want to return it are very slim.

                          RE: Extend Trial Period

I wasn't aware that MS offered 100% money back guarentees. Maybe they took a que from Alpha.

I don't think Alpha ever intended for anyone to work through all or even most aspects of the program within 30 or 45 days. But rather, to wet your appetite and compare some of the features that you used in another program.

It appears that Laurie has been able to do that in comparing A5v5 to MS Visual Studio as she is ready to purchase V5. FWIW, It didn't take me 6 days to dump VB6 for A5v4. I couldn't justify reinventing the wheel on a much longer learning curve with subpar message boards.

Just happened to me with Alpha 5. I got so busy with work I only saw a few features. Never did get around to using the command line to see if I can throw lots of xbase commands at it. Thing is though, even if I had twice as long I might not find time to really test it.

I wish demos timed out differently. Perhaps based on a count of days on which it was launched, not the total days from installation.

                              RE: Extend Trial Period

The runtime version of A5 will let you create a trial version of an A5 database that is limited only by the number of records you can put in the database instead of by the number of days the trial copy has been used.

I wish A5 would do the same with its trial version of the software, as 30 days is truly not enough time to learn A5.

If they would put a 10-record limit on any database designed during the trial, it would be much better than having it time-out after 30 days. 10 records is enough data for testing purposes, but wouldn't be enough for any business to actually use -- so the user would end up having to purchase A5 to get the benefit of the database they have designed. Just my 2 cents.
