Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Bug in Build 1410_1035

Mailing label set up with USPS Barcode worked fine for me with Alpha 5 V 5 at least through Build 1385_1026. I have regularly applied newly released patches to the A5V5 installation on one of my two computers. I discovered that the USPS Barcode does not now appear during Preview on my machine with Build 1410_1035. Worse, when I try to print labels with USPS Barcode, A5V5 Build 1410_1035 crashes. My machine with Build 1385_1026 Previews and Prints the labels fine even when the label definition was created on the machine with Build 1410_1035. Both machines are Pentium III's running Win 98SE. This has the earmarks of a bug that was introduced with one of the Patches since 1385_1026. Is this really a bug?

        RE: Bug in Build 1410_1035

Can I safely apply an older Patch, say Build 1385_1026 to an installation that has been updated to 1410_1036? The problem I am having is with 1410_1036, not 1410_1035 as I typed in error. Thanks.

            RE: Bug in Build 1410_1035

I applied the 1385-1026 patch (the version that works on my other machine) to the installation that had been upgraded to 1410_1036. The problem did NOT go away. The barcodes still do not show in preview and if the labels are sent to the printer A5V5 crashes under the 1385_1026 that works fine on my other machine. Therefore, I conclude there is something wrong with the basic installation on my problem machine. I presume I can go back and do an original install and then upgrade to the new patch. I can also apply the newest patch to the "unmolested" machine and verify the the labels work ok under 1410_1036. More later.

As long as you did not incorporate a new feature, function ect into the app.

                  Sorry,

While some patches contain pure fixes to problems, others add features, new functions, new xbasic language new scripting features ect. If you have not made use of any of these value added features, you can go back. If you did, these features would obviously not work, since in a sense they don't exist yet.

                    RE: Bug in Build 1410_1035

On the machine with A5V5 that displays (Preview) and prints mail labels with USPS bar codes correctly (updated to Patch 1385_1026), ran the 1410_1036 Patch. On this machine the USPS bar codes still display and print correctly. Therefore, I conclude there is not a problem with 1410_1036 itself. There is something wrong with the installation of A5V5 on my other machine. I will reinstall A5V5 from the original disc and reapply the latest patch.

When I think back the version of A5V5 "spontaneously" became unusable twice in recent months. In each case the program would open but would not open any of my databases. In both cases, I got it running again by simply reapplying the most recent Patch. I have not purchased any Alpha 5 add-ins other than the Contact Manager that I obtained at the outset.

                    More later.

I reinstalled A5V5 on my problem machine from the original disk. With the original build I purchased, the USPS barcodes displayed and printed correctly. I then applied the 1410_1036 Patch, and now the barcodes display correctly. This is the third time that A5V5 became "damaged" on this machine. Curious. Maybe it was all a tempest in a teapot. Thanks everybody. John Rachow

                        RE: Bug in Build 1410_1035

I had to reinstall A5V5 from the original distribution disc. The USPS barcodes then displayed correctly on my mail label designs. I then applied the latest patch 1410_1036 to the reinstallation and the USPS barcodes are now correctly displaying. Thninking back over the last few months, this is the third time A5V5 on this machine has become "damaged". That is, A5 would start up but would not open any of my databases. In the previous two cases, simply reapplying the latest patch restored A5V5 to working order. In this episode with the barcodes, I had to do an original reinstall. Whatever. Its working again. Thanks for all the help and suggestions. John Rachow
