Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Child records / calc field

I would like to update a field in a table to reflect the current number of child records in the set. Can this be done with a field rule such as ...

    Tablecount("child.dbf","custid = 'parent->custid'")

It doesn't work, but it would be very helpful to find a way to do this.

    Thanks

RE: Child records / calc field

    David,

The current count of linked 1:N child records can be shown on your form:

    http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/alphaphorum/read.php3?sortby=lastreply&direction=desc&num=11&id=2358&thread=2356

Showing it in a display calc field on your form does not store it in your primary table, but that may not actually be necessary. It can be recomputed whenever you need it, even in reports, for example.

If you must store the current count in your parent table another approach might be to create a post field rule for the child table. Every time a new child record is entered add 1 to the running count field in the primary table. I'm confident this will work with new child table records. You should test the behavior of the field rule if a child record should later be deleted. Perhaps there's a way to subtract 1 on each delete. Certainly it could be scripted in your form, but I'm thinking the post field rule will handle it for you... just check it. If you can get the post field rule to do it, I think that's a better solution since fewer records would have to be moved over the network in order to generate the new total count, compared to methods that use tablesum or dbsum functions.

RE: Child records / calc field

      Tom,

I have had the same problem and your solution was of great help. Thanks so much. However one problem still remains. Specifically, this field doesn't get updated when the number of child records changes.

In my parent form, I have prompts for a FromDate and ToDate. The filters of my embedded browse restrict the child records displayed. Whenever a date changes so as to change the applicable child records, my embedded browse refreshes correctly as a result of OnChange code. The same code now refreshes the new field displaying the count. That field, however, never changes from what it displayed initially.

So my question is whether the new calculated variable is sufficient to count only the child records satifying the filter of the embedded browse? That variable is currently: count(Timehist->Date2,GRP->EMPLOYEE). I've tried playing with the additional 'G each' parameter but I've had no luck. Any suggestions?

RE: Child records / calc field

        Stephen,

Sounds like the Count() function is counting the number of linked records, and not the number of records currently on display in your filtered browse object. I think this may be normal.

I don't know of a function which counts rows in the embedded browse object.

You may have to try another approach to computing the number of linked child records that meet the current filter specifications. The tablecount() function comes to mind, as something you could investigate.

RE: Child records / calc field

          Tom,

It so happens that it works if I trace through the OnChange code with 'debug(1)'. But when I comment the trace out, the field doesn't refresh properly. It seems that this is really a question of when the calc variables get updated. I've tried refreshing the entire topparent form in addition but that doesn't work either.

Thanks for your input. But I think I will be taking an entirely new approach to finding this count.
