Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Carry Linked Field Info to New Child Form

    First, I am not a programmer. I am a singer.
    I have created a database for Booking Concerts based on a previous database application I used yeas ago in DataPerfect.

    In a 1:many a set, where the Parent is Sponsor and the Child is Appearances. The matching fields are Sponsor ID; Organization; City, State; Zip Code. I placed a Button on the Sponsor Form to create a New record in the Appearance Form. When it does, I want it to automatically fill in the linking fields, so I can proceed to fill in the rest of the form. I'm sure this can be done without the extra steps of doing a lookup - but I don't know how.

    Can you help me? Thank you.

    Jeff, visit the Code Archive forum. Look for my example showing 3 different ways you can pass values from one form to another. The topic description is somehthing like

    Pass Values between Forms

    or

      RE: Carry Linked Field Info to New Child Form

      Tom,

      Thanks for the quick response. Can you explain a bit in simple terms how I can use the "if" statemen as it applies to the "Sponsor" and "Appearances" forms? Also, do I insert the code:

      if is_object("Sponsors") then
      OrdHdr1.show()
      OrdHdr1.activate()
      else
      :form.view("Sponsors")
      end if

      in place of the

      DIM layout_ptr as P
      layout_ptr = :Form.load("Appearances")
      layout_ptr:tables:CONCERT SPONSORS.filter_expression="SPONSOR_ID = '" + SPONSOR_ID.TEXT + "'"
      layout_ptr:tables:CONCERT SPONSORS.order_expression=""
      layout_ptr:tables:CONCERT SPONSORS.query()
      layout_ptr.show()
      layout_ptr.activate()

      Forgive my inorance. Thanks for your help.

        RE: Carry Linked Field Info to New Child Form

        Jeff,

        Sorry, without knowing a LOT more about your application, and the context in which these scripts will run I cannot safely advise you. Your question is sort of like asking someone who's never seen the score for a concerto whether it's ok to switch or substitute a few measures here and there. No can do.

        You will either need to describe, narratively, the exact setting, or better yet, you should upload a dummy database that contains specimen tables and forms similar to your real database. If you do the latter, please include specific directions and a clear goal statement for the changes you need.

        On our best days this software stuff is slippery business.

        By the way, if the scripts in the example I referred to you don't make sense, it's time to get the manual out. Work through them one line at a time. Nothing is there by accident. Each line plays a role, and has a specific context. They're all in the Xbasic Ref. Manual. It will serve you little good to copy something. Far better to understand what makes it tick. I and others will be ready to answer questions if you get stuck along the way.

          Tom,

          Here goes.

          My goal is to complete creating a new record in the Sponsors form; push a button to open a new record in Appearances - pulling though the info and filling in the common fields in the Appearances form - specifically, the Sponsor ID; Organization Name; City; State & Zip Code.

          Also, do you know of any users group or anyone near Orlando that is expert at Alpha to get some help?

          I have looked at the XBasic Ref Guide, but could not find anything that seemed to head me in the right direction; OR I'm dense.

          Thanx for your help.

            Hello Jeff,

            Frances Peake is down there is Florida somewhere. Frances is a long time very competent Alpha Five developer.

            But, this really isn't hard to do. I created a short demo showing you how to do this, and am sending it to you. Unfortunatly I cannot attach it to this message as it is 1.8 megs.

              Hi Jeff,

              DataPerfect.....Good thing they had an 800 help line. I spent alot of time on the phone with them. No doubt their phone bill put DP out of business for WordPerfect.

              Alpha 4 came along just in time and the switch was easy and a much better and easier to use product.

              Good Luck,

                Jeff,

                Our Tampa user group has been dormant for a while, but the natives are getting restless. Will be starting again soon. Will remember you when the announcements go out, if you wish.

                I'll look at the app, and will get back to you.

                  Ken,

                  Not so. Their 800 support was not only unprecedented; but it made them a superior Software company. They went out of business because they sold out to Novell; and then Corel.

                  As for DataPerfect, They made a great DOS based database. They abandoned it and their customers when the company decided not to migrate to Windows. What a shame. I created an amazing database (with their support and help) beyond what either of us thought could be done with this limited software.

                  I didn't change to Alpha until Alpha 5 version 4. The transition was not as easy for me as it had been quite a few years since I worked on building a database.

                    Jeff,

                    here's one approach for you to study.

                    I've created a simpler set.
                    I've created two forms. One button.

                    Begin by studying the set,
                    then open Toms_form1.

                    Unzip the attachment to an empty folder.
