Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Keyboard menu accelerators

    Hi folks.
If I place a button on a form with the button text set as &Find, the Alt-F keyboard function doesn't work, i.e. the button isn't "pressed" when I key Alt-F. What could I be doing wrong? The same thing happens on several buttons I have created on the form.

Also, (to retain functional continuity with an A4V6 app), is there a way of enabling the button to be "pressed" by simply keying F instead of Alt-F? That facility should only be available when a record is not being entered or changed, to avoid the button being activated every time "F" appears when entering data.

(I want to use these keyboard shortcuts to enter, change, delete, find or print records.)

    TIA
    Paul

    RE: Keyboard menu accelerators

    Paul,

on your second question, your onKey script could check the 'Mode' of the form, processing the 'F' only when the form is in view mode.

A word of caution. If you spend a lot of time building an Alpha Four interface you will quickly discover you're swimming against the Windows tide. It won't be easy, and in many cases, your users (especially new users) won't appreciate it. A primary advantage of Windows' world is that the interface works the same from app to app. You place this in jeopardy if you replicate Alpha Four's approach.

      Paul,

On your first question, is Alt_F used as a hotkey elsewhere in the form? In the menu ?

The default menu uses it for the File menu, I believe.

Perhaps Alpha is confused about what to do?

(this is a small example of the 'tide' I referred to, above)

        Paul,

Use Ctrl-F to access your button.

Ah. Check mode. Forgot about that. Thanks, Tom. (Still a rookie!)

Re making the app work like the A4 app, yes I have been feeling the same as you for a while now. I have been trying to design the A5 app to work like the old A4 app, and I think I should stop before I tie myself up in knots. I guess it's easier to retrain the staff to use A5!

Thanks Tom for an amazingly fast response.

No, it's not used elsewhere. If you mean the top menu, I'm not sure about that, I am no longer at the computer with the app on but will check that. I intend anyway to hide most of the top menus - give people facilities and they will only go an use them!

You're right about the tide. I have now stopped it. Call me King Canute from now on!

              Thanks Gary.
Tried that earlier but it didn't work either.
What I would like is to simply key F, but I can't find a way to do it...

I discovered why Ctrl-F hasn't been working. A faulty Ctrl key on the keyboard. Switched keyboards and now it works - you know how sometimes the cause of a problem is so obvious that it's is too obvious to even consider... :-)
