Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A Real Challenge

Don't know if I can post a small zip or not but here's what's happening. Tom Cone said I can sure come up with the wierd stuff and this is an example.

20 fields. User enters data in fields 1-10 and then the tab order is to a Save button. Later on, the user needs to put values into vields 11-20. So, not being able to use the tab order, I put field12.activate() on the OnDepart event of field 11, ditto through field 19 and then Button4.activate() on field 20 to go to the same Save button. This works A-OK.

However, once I click into field 11, if I don't want to tab all the way through to field 20, I cannot abort or click to the save button. No mater which button I click, anywhere on the form, the focus goes from field to field until it gets to the Save button.

Say I click on field 11, enter a value, tab to field 12, enter a value, tab to field 13 and enter another value. I have no data for fields 14 - 20 so I click on the Save button. The cursor moves to field 14. Click again on the Save button and it moves to field 15 and on and on until it runs the gammet to the Save button.

Bet no one's experienced this before. This is one bet I'd like to lose.

    Thanks,

OK, I removed the code and made them tab stop fields. When I try to tab form one field to the next, I get this error message, Not an executable file.

These are Type-in fields. Wonder if alpha's been drinking beer?

      Ken,

You may need to delete each of the ofending fields one by one and then replace them untill the error message goes.

        Ken,

It sounds like the OnDepart event for your field objects is working as designed.

Two thought crossed my sleepy brain as I read your post:

        1) Would the user be happier with two forms, with separate tab orders?

        2) You could build conditions into the onDepart event scripts so that they don't fire if a variable value is such and such. The user could then toggle behaviors. They set it one way and onDepart fires for each field. They set it differently, and it does not.

          Ken,

Sounds to me like its doing exactly what you coded it to do. How about this...

          1. Set your tab order to jump from field 11 to field 12 and from field 20 to the save button.

          2. In the field_11 OnDepart event, pop up an X-dialog asking the user if they wish to save, edit or abort their changes. When the dialog changes, place focus wherever you want.

How about putting the tab order in the sequence 1 to 10 and then to the save button. Then tab to fields 11 to 20. In the on activate event of form test for an entry in field 10. If present give focus to field 11; if not present, to field 1. In the on depart event of field 20 pop up the dialog Louis suggested to save the record.

              Keith, Tom, Louis, Ohlen:

I considered all advice, taking into account that I had already tried most of it. The one thing I hadn't tried was deleting and replacing the fields. I tried deleting and replacing one field and then tabbing from it. No Error message.

So, I deleted and replaced the rest. No error messages. What gave Alpha the upset stomach, I haven't a clue. And the winner is.....Keith. Well, sort of...

While Keith's answer did the trick, Tom, Louis and Ohlen are winners as well. I can't say enough how appreciative I am that you guys took time to make a suggestion. No matter how great Alpha will ever be, it's greatest asset and strength are the folks on this message board. It's really the seceret of success for all of us, especially me.

Thank you! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

On the note of the error message:

If you have a code in any of the events with meaningless junk such as
                'do not delete this code
                'created:
                'created by:

the error message you got Ken will occur. Simply remove all the characters and save the event and presto the error code disappears.
