Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Printer override settings

    Hi,

I am having problems with printing, especially using the override printer option. I have made some more changes to my sample database and have zipped it up once more. If you unzip it and try the print button, you will see that it does not do what I desire it to do. I want it to print 1 or more copies of Report 1 (user specifies number of copies) and then to print ONLY one copy of Report 2 as specified in the printer override settings. I'm not sure why it doesn't work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Best regards,
    Robin Sculthorpe

      RE: Printer override settings

      Robin,

I am not sure this is good news or bad news. In any case, your print button works properly for me (though I am a bit behind here, using build 1399-1029, which I suppose could have something to do with the issue). All I did was edit your rpt 2 action script to select one of my printers (had to of course because printer_override() is specific to the user's machine and printer drivers). Then when I clicked your print button I selected 2 copies for rpt 1 and I got 2 copies of rpt 1 and 1 copy of rpt 2. Is this not what is supposed to happen? FYI, the printer I used was an HP4 with Postscript, though I doubt that it matters. I am also using win2k.

        RE: Printer override settings

        Hi,

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, whatever number of copies I select for Report 1 is what I get for Report 2. I am using an HP Lasserjet 4100 (network printer). Hmmm, I tried overriding a different printer setting and that worked (i.e. portrait instead of landscape), so it appears that setting the number of copies is a problem. Not sure where to go from here. Could this be a compatability problem with Alpha 5 and this particular printer driver?

        Alpha software techs, any thoughts?

I would really like for this to work (actually using this to print labels, although using the report format).

        Kind regards,
        Robin Sculthorpe

          RE: Printer override settings

          Hi again,

I stated in my last reply that this problem occurred with my Laserjet 4100 printer (using standard TCP protocol), but it also occurs with my Dymo 330 Labelwriter (using a USB port). I am using the latest build 1403-1034 and Windows 98. I'm going to try it on a different computer in my work area to see if it still occurs.

            RE: Printer override settings

Since it works for me it is difficlt for me to test things. So if you could, would you please try the following:

Create 2 separate buttons to print report 1 and report 2 (same action scripts that you combined in the original button). Then print rpt 1 selecting 2 copies. Then print rpt 2. Does rpt 2 work correctly this way? If so, I would think there is clearly a bug that Selwyn needs to know about. If not, then your problem probably has something to do the action scripts being combined in the one button (effectively it is just one script in Xbasic and there may need to be a "last_printer" line or two added somewhere--see p184 of the xBasic reference manual).

As for trying this on other computers, be aware that your action script 2 is specific to the computer (and it's printer drivers) on which the button was designed. If you go to another win 98 machine on the network that connects to the same printer in the same way, it may work. But if the different computer has a different OS or connects to the printer in a different way, it won't work. Which is why I have developed a rather complex system for doing the kind of thing you are trying to do--but how it works is way to complex to go onto here.

              Hi,

My button works at home (Win XP and HP psc2110), so I will try your suggestion at work tomorrow and see if maybe I need to convert the scripts to Xbasic and try your suggested tweaking. I will get back to this thread with my results.

              Thank you so much.

                Hi again,

I tried two separate buttons, and still it won't work to override the number of copies. It must be a bug. I don't know if it is a Windows 98 problem or not, but any print jobs that I have, when the printer window opens, the number of copies is what is was set to for the previous print job. Alpha 5 doesn't seem to be able to override the number of copies on my work computers for either printer I am using.

                Again, thanks for your help.
