Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Network Optimize

    Hello,

Finally got an app working on 9 runtime machines each using their own shadow data base. All machines including the server are WIN2000. Have a refresh button on the main menu done with action scripting(And it works fine).

Now that I have had a couple of weeks experience, with this system, I am getting lazy, and want to use the built in A5 message whereby if the build number is changed, it gives the runtime machines a message to do a refresh on their own. Instead of me yelling across the office, hey everybody hit your refresh buttons. During the day, the program is in a constant update situation. I would like to change the build number once a day for awhile, till the app is more mature, and a message is given to the each user.

So my question is........I have tried a few times undertools/network refresh/options on the development machine to change the version number, and change it to a new version number. So far I have not been able to do it, and so the runtime machines do not see the updated build number to pop up the message for the user to do a refresh.

Could someone please point me in the right direction. As I must be doing something wrong to implement this.

    Thanks Ed

Open the database on the server
    Go to the controlpanel
Select tools, network optimize from the menu
    Click the options tab
Set the version to something other than what is is now
Select the update option desired, probably auto refresh
    Click the set button
    Close the database

Now go to any terminal and open the shadowed local database. The user will get a message and the terminal shadow will be updated. I have done much experimenting with this and as long as the users have full rights, is should be seamless.

      RE: Network Optimize

      Hello Jerry,

      Thanks for the directions.

That is what I was doing. When I got that far, I picked "Entire version number". The default was 1.1--- So the first try I changed it to 1.1.1. When a runtime machine was started, it did no refresh.(Nor did Alpha keep the number 1.1.1)

When I changed it to 2.1(Alpha took the number), and it finally refreshed the machine I was testing with.

To get off in the right direction, which one is best selection to use? ("Entire Version #" or "Integr Portiion Only")? Then what would be the sequence of numbers to use? Will the program take a number like 2.1.1 then change to 2.1.2, and so on.

I will probably be making changes through out the work day for awhile, till things get adjusted, and would like to make this work correctly.

      Thanks again for your input.

I think the best answer is "whatever". Most developers use their own system. I normally use a simple numbering system where I increment each build by 1, similar to Alpha who are up to build 1397. I sometimes use a decimal system like 2.1, 2.2, etc. Both work, but if I were updating changes daily, I would probably use a decimal system. I then update using the complete version number. I don't really seen a reason for using the integer portion only, but I am sure it is perfect for someone.

Whatever method you use, you have to manually change the number each time you want to update. It is not automatic.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my crazy questions. You have zeroed me in. It may sound elementary, but wanted to make sure I did not mess things up at this point, or go off in the wrong direction.

I have seen a few posts where people have programed their own network optimize. So I was not sure what to expect from A5 itself. Other than the comments in the optinize windows, I could not find anything in the documentation to help me out.

          Have a nice night...............Ed
