Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Embedded Browse Behavior

I upgraded my A5 Version 4.5 app to version 5 and it has required a bit of rebuilding. Now I am getting free of most of the rebuilds I am left with a few quirky differences. I wonder if anyone has any comments on this current one.

I have a set with child and grandchild tables. I have a form with embedded browse objects for both the child and grandchild tables. I will do data entry in these browse objects. I am stumbling over Alpha 5 resetting the record location on the child table as I work on the grandchild table. A5 wants to keep moving to the first child record.

I will be absorbed in adding data to the grandchild table for the last child record and budda bing it went to the first child record and I have to delete the records and re-enter them.

If I scroll the grandchild browse below what will display in one screen, it automatically resets the child browse to the first record.

This is making data entry very frustrating, and while it happened in version 4.5 it happens a lot more in version 5. I could create mini popup forms (dialog forms) but I am trying to quit programming. I now have a large backlog of proposals to write and don't want to program anymore - I don't get paid for this.

First be sure you are using the newest build, which is 1397_1028. There were a number of fixes in this build for issues with browses. You can get the lastest build on the tech support link on the Alphasoftware web site.

OK - I just upgraded from version 27 to 28.

First child record I add, and save, it immediately displays the grandchild records from the first child record. Something is not getting worked through all the parts. Move off the child record and back, now it shows OK.

Add a record to a grandchild. As soon as I save the record the form resynchs back to the first child record.

Now - in version 4 there were issues with browse refreshing and I have code that refreshes browses as a "fix". Is this version 4 "fix" still needed? I would love to get this cleaned up, even just a little, and I don't have time to play around. This "fix" may be my stumble in version 5.

      Thanks for the response, Jerry.

How about posting a sample of the database with some sample data. Just delete most of the data and use the builtin zip tool to zip up the database, tables, and sets. It is difficult to visualize what is happening without seeing the structure of you tables and sets with sample data.

          RE: Embedded Browse Behavior

Just went over your posts again. Two thoughts. First, there should have been no need to rewrite your application upgrading to a5v4.5 to a5v5 unless you had some unusual workaround code for some purpose. Second, if you are using resynch() to refresh your browse, this could be the source of the problem. Resynch() will reset the display to the record that has focus, which may be the last one used, not the current one entered. This has been an issue for a very long time, at least back to A5v4.0. Try refresh() instead.

Yep. Similar problem: I put the cursor on a child record in an embedded browse, and after a few seconds the pointer jumps back to the first child record. No resynch or refresh involved. Just sit & watch.

I have the exact think happen. If I do a invert order, my browse will take about 3 seconds to refresh() auotmatically to the new record. I have tried lots of things to get around this, so far unsuccessful.
