Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Auto Increment

Does anyone now how to set a field to auto increment based on the record number order, rather than the active index number order?

I had a table in V4.5 that I could simply set back to user entered to allow numbers that were 'out of sequence' and of a higher value to be entered, then enter the next number in the original sequence before setting the field back to auto increment, and it would increment from the last record entered irrespective of its value.

In V5 the current index would appear to be deciding where the sequence begins incrementing from.

I've looked back through previous threads and found reference to the PREVIOUS() function, but if I leave out the index tag i.e. PREVIOUS(increment,"") focus is given to which ever record I'm viewing when starting a new record.

Ps Its a character field - example "CR01234"

    Thanks for any suggestions.

    RE: Auto Increment

    Hi Richard,

Some things to look at. The Operations tab, there is an Update Records operation and then choose Assign Serial Values. Also, search the board using autoincrement (one word)(as well as the v4 board). I would think that your setup w/v4.5 ought to work because nothing in v5 should have changed that.

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

      RE: Auto Increment

      Richard,

check the User Guide for more details, but I think V5 is indexing your table on the auto-increment field, and is using the highest value found in the index list as the value which gets incremented when a new record is entered.

I recommend you re-think the possibility of using the record number as a basis for assigning unique values to each record. The record number is not a static value. It WILL change for records your table whenever you delete records, and then pack the table or compact the database. These means record numbers would become available for re-use and you'd wind up with duplicate values in your table.

        RE: Auto Increment

        Thanks Ken & Tom,

The field doesn't use the actual record number for its value, but as the basis for the last record entered to begin incrementing from.

This way the increment start value can be re-set by manually entering the last record before setting the feild value back to auto increment. I use this feature when recording EAN 13 barcode numbers against product codes - sometimes a customer wants their own barcode used with an own brand product, so the series of numbers is altered for that one record only.

e.g field values in record number order:
        501713400001
        501713400002
        501713400003
        502940100240 - customer own barcode
        501713400004 - sequence resumes
        501713400005 etc.

        Thanks again.

          Richard,

Sorry, can't offer suggestions. Don't understand the problem. I don't know of a way to disable the autoincrement field rule temporarily using a script, instead of doing it manually from the control panel. Perhaps you'll have to code your own auto-increment script to get this desired flexibility. -- tom

            It can be done.

What is the name of the table and field?

              Richard
Assuming the table name is "Invoice.dbf" and the field were you keep the number is "Codefield".

It can be done by creating two new fields.

A character field, lets say "Characterfield" and a numeric field, lets say "Numberfield"

The character field for the "CR".

The numeric field for the "01234"

Then create a numeric field called LASTRECNO. In this field rules default value enter the following expression:
              tablemax("Invoice.dbf",".t.","Lastrecordno")+1
This will create a unique incremental field that can be indexed.

Then create an index based on LASTRECNO, lets say "LRNINDEX"

In the field rules default value for the "Numberfield" enter the following expression:
              lookupn("F",(maximum(Lastrecordno)),"Numberfield","Invoice.dbf","Lrvindex")+1

Make "Characterfield" calculated set to "CR"

Now, make "Codefield" calculated set to TRIM(Characterfield)+You must use of of the PAD?() functions here (STR(Numberfield)

Make sure you backup your database before you experiment.

Richard I hope I made myself clear, if not just let me know.

                Hi Robert,

Thanks very much for the reply.

Just read your suggestion and it looks like a winner to me.

Thanks again & I'll post how I've got on.

                Regards,
