Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Multi-select record list

    Just wanted to clarify something:

In an xdialog Record lists can be drop-down, combo or list boxes, but they can't be multi-select record list, right?

To get the same effect, you must use the external_record_content_get and load that list into a multi-select listbox.

    Is that right?

      RE: Multi-select record list

Back in November Selwyn wrote a Tutorial "How to prompt the user for Multiple Valueks before printing a report or running an Operation.

He showed how to use the "Multi-select list Box" option to select multiple cities and print a report showing only those cities selected.

If you can't find the Tutorial, let me know & I'll send it to you, it's a Word.doc (prints best is you use Legal size paper landscape .

        Blake,

That is not right, you can set the data list as aprt of the dialog box instead of loading it from a table. The choice is yours. Check out Lesson 2 in Learning Xdialog, I sleep with this under my pillow.

But then it's not a Record List object. What I'm trying to make sure is that creating a multi-select record list isn't just a matter of adding a %M% to the usual record list, or something of that sort.

And, yes, my pillow is a bit lumpy these days, too.

            Thanks, Barry.

Uh, where would I look for it? Not here on the message board or I think I would have found it. Not in the Code Archive, likewise.

              Hi Blake

I am not sure what you want to do. Do you want a multiselect box with data from an external table or the data from a built in list?

PS I have an example of what Barry was talking about.

                ----------------------------------

Maybe my terminology is wrong: I want the data to come from a table. My understanding of the term "external table" is that it refers to a table that isn't the current one on the form. My understanding of the term "record list" is "a list of records from a table".

Using those terms: I need a multi-select record list from a table, not necessarily external.

There was a post from Selwyn Rabins of Alpha a short time ago about multi select using keylist_build advising that it is not available right now. However, there is an alternative. You can populate an array with values from a table and then create a multiselect listbox using the array. If you like the effect of the vertical lines, this can be done with an array.
