Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Lookup Table Kills A5

If I make a field a lookup field and have it point to an A5 table, attempting to drop-down a list for that field will cause A5 to crash. Sometimes I'll get an A5 error message first: "Unhanded Exception. Alpha 5 will terminate."

    Othertimes it'll just crash.

It's kind of cramping my style. Any thoughts?

      Hello Blake,

The latest build or two have fixed this issue (unless you are seeing something new!).

Make sure you are using the latest build and let us know if the problem goes away.

      Good luck,
      Jim

        Copied from the web page:
        -------------------------

        Your Alpha Product Number: a5v5
        Your Build Number: 13891027

You have the most current build of your product. There are no downloads currently available.
        -------------------------

Apparently my luck is running low.

Blake, do the lookups in AlphaSports work ok on your machine? (Vendor_Id in Product table, for example) If so, that probably rules out hardware conflicts with your machine. If they don't work in AlphaSports it may be conflict with your video display adapter, try dialing down or eliminating hardware acceleration onboard the video adapter.

AlphaSports on this machine crashes with the exact same "Unhandled Exception. Alpha 5 will do a forced termination." message I get when I use a lookup table. But I was reasonably sure I was running AlphaSports on my other dev machine.

Yeah, okay: On Win2K, AlphaSports bombs out, won't even start. On Win98SE, it works fine, including the lookup tables. My simple lookups are still not working, though. (I mean, I have a test app which is nothing but a table with a field that does a lookup to another table and that crashes.)

I tried dialing down the acceleration on Win2K, updated the drivers, no joy: Still just bombs out. Huh. Not exactly reassuring.

              hi:

in the previous version (a5v4) i was having problems with norton utilities running at the same time as alpha. running winfax pro 8 as a tsr (or whatever you call it in windows) would kill alpha. maybe try diabling any programs that load on startup and try again.

i suspect that it maybe a combination of issues.

              regards,

              ed

I do believe you're right because it just suddenly started working. I can now run AlphaSports--as long as I do it from within A5, as opposed to double-clicking on AlphaSports.ADB.

As a rule, though, I run VERY clean. I don't run virus checkers, screen savers, background utilities--nothing. (This comes in part from using Windows 9x where the first step in any trouble-shooting was "make sure only systray and taskbar are running" and in part from not wanting my computer doing stuff that I don't know about.)

Anyway, it looks like I'm okay until the next weird problem pops up.
